DAILY CAPITAL JOURNAL, SALEM OREGON, SATURDAY,' NOVEMBER 10, 1010. ' PAGE ELEVEN. TAT" McARTHVR PLiAYS GAIXAJJT CJKXTLEMAX Shews Eugene High School ('Iris All Splits Worth Hp-liig In tlio Capital City. "Pat" Mo.Arthur remembered hW ' Eugene friends fast Saturday and entertained for two hours 18 Eugi-no High School girls who fornied part of the excursion to Salem on account of the football game, by showing them the various sights of the state capital:- Now the 18 fair Eugene co eds are telling what a fine fellow "Pat" Is. The bevy of girls were Aimlessly wandorlng about the spa c'oub halls of the state house, won dering what lay behind the mass've doors and how they were to flnJ their way to the top of the great dome that they had seen from tho -outside. Gracious "Pat" slopped outride his private office and found theuV In their pIlRht. At once ho volunteered to show them about the building. From room to room they . went, peeped in through the doo" where the supreme court was In ses sion and visited everything, even io the great dome at the top of the lorn? flight of Iron stnlrs. So Interesting and gracious was the secretary to the governor that the young lad'c isca'reely realized how the time had flown and thnt their strange escort had been wasting any of his time, nnd when he volunteered to take them to the state prison, they all falrlv shrieked their acceptance. So the friend of the university returnej to his office, took his hat and led his young friends to the nearest street ' car which bounced along on Its four -wheels across the city. At the great gates of the prison they were dls mayed to see the excluding Blgn that read "no admittance to visitors ou Saturday." But at high s'gn from "Pat" the portals swung open and . the a'rls filed Into what seemed to tie forbidden territory; Almost anolk er hour was spent about the diurnal nnd uncanny sights in ' this, huge building, seeing the dungeon, the paddod cells and many other sights to tell about when they returned home. Suddenly some one realized that it was noon and the girls reluc tantly left the building. On the re turn they began to think how good their self-appointed escore had been and the chlvarrous secretary was almost smothered by the thanks of the young ladles. Eugene Guard, o The November Wide Worll Muznginc One of the most Interesting and amusing articles In the November "Wide World Magatlne" is "The Servant Question In Japan," by Evelyn Adam. Every country and especially every so-called civilised country has its "servant question," and this article, written by a lady who hns spent many years in Japan, deals with the curious little ways of the servants, male and female, of .the Land of the Chrysanthemum. U -will be read with Infinite Interest by every housewife who knows any- - thing at all of the trials and tribu lations of "hired help." Another In teresting article and one full of val uable Information Is "A Naturalist In New Guinea," by A. E. Pratt, The author narrates his, manifold experiences among the primitive In habitants, many of whom are ex tremely trencherous and bloodthirs ty. Mrs. L. M. Fagan, whose hus band. General Fagan, was appointed Regent of DusLar" one of the Feuda tory States of India, during the min ority of the Rajah, ' describes the manners and customs of the people of this "Unknown Land"; Mrs. A. E. Scott writes of hor "Honeymoon on the Zambesi,'! and there are many other stories nnd articles of a cbar cater which one Mis come to look for In this unique and remarkable magazine. ... o State of Ohio, City of Toledo.
