It should not be forgotten that, In a senso, Hcrculnncum and Pompeii belong to tho world. Men not In this generation, but many hundreds of years ago, mndo thoso burled cities. Nature, In a convulsion, re claimed them as her own; in fnct, they aro mines, and in America everybody Is Interested In learning what mines will yield. Those old nnd burled haunts of men long ago passed away have boon mines re vealing a past civilization. They are, in this respect, unique. Tho Western spirit Ib piqued nnd chal lenged partly by curiosity as to what yet remains to bo unveiled, partly by tho groat difficulties to be .over come and partly by a sonBO of what future generations will reap In tho way of art knowledge. As to tho nrt, literary, architect ural and other values burled In llorculnnoum, there aro two theo ries, each having its lonrned apolo gists. One school casts doubt on tho probablo results of recoveries nnd holds that burrowing among the ruins would bo followed by llttlo to odd to our knowledgo of Greco-Itnl-lan civilization. With moro upparent reason tho antagonistic school points to facts of history. Though tho origin of Hor culanoum U in doubt, there is a tra dition that Horculea founded it on his voyago from Spain to Italy. It flourished as early as tho Saranlto wars and for many, many years it was frequented as a resort by wealthy Romans. That was Its prominence as early as tho first century In our calendar. Situated on a rocky ridge between two BtreamB, five miles from Naples, with Vesuvius on tho northeast, tho situation was ideal for families of wealth rmd culture. Speaking roughly, Herculanoum bore to Pompeii about the relation that Brooklyn has to Coney Island one was an established city and the other a watering place. Tho Infer ence that the city would yield finer and more valuable nrt treasures than Pompoll has produced 1b sure ly justified, so far as present knowl edge goes. Works of art dug up at Horculaneum havo been found to surpass In quantity and quality any thing found at Pompeii, and many of them are in tho National Museum at Naples. They Include 128 bronze statues and twenty-four marble statues, besides candelbrn, tripods and vase3 that were the inspiration of tho Renaissance. Excavations carried on Interrolt-t-.ntly from 1709, when an Austrian general, In sinking a shaft to hunt for burled treasures, came on the top of a theater at Horculaneum, to 1876, have brought to light not only this theater but two curiae, two temples, a basilica, so callfd, and a large country villa. Much damage has been done by hunting for are trCasnres. Buildings havo been p'erced and stripped of marble and frescoes. Statues have been removed to foreign construes and Irremediably lost, Feraa? worst of all, from tke irtasdpolat of NEWPORT The Ideal Pacific Coast Resort on YAQUINA BAY Comfortably and quickly reached from SALEM via Southern Pacific to Albany, thenco Corvrtllls & Eastern Rnilrond.
