Comparatively fow country homos have, as yet, a system of water works which supplies water to all parts of tho house. But wo aro speedily coming to that. Tho day Isn't far off when tho pump will no longer bo opernted by hnnd, nnd water will bo at our sorvlco "upstairs, downstairs, and In by lady's chain hor." This Is as tlshould bo, for tho household that Is obliged to make many trips to tho pump In tho yard dally wastes a good deal of tlmo and labor that might bottor bo applied to other work. Tho Binall gasoline en gine Is going to solve tho problem of wnter supply for tho Iioubq for us. It Is going to do away with tho noisy, unsightly, nnd complicated wind-mill. It can oaslly bo mndo to pump from tho well or other sourco of water supply to tho attic of the house, from which It can bo distri buted everywhere In pipes. Such a system can bo put Into any houso with but voryjlttlo trouble, at any time, If opon plumbing Is not objected to, and nowadays most per sons prefer that to tho conconlod system. Large tanks or rosorvolrs will not bo needed, for a fow mlnutos operation of the engine onoh day will bo sutllolout to lift nil tho water re quired during 24 hours. Tho fresher itls tho bottor. Tho servleos of a plumber will be nocossary. of courso, In Installing such n systom, but, this onco don , and dono woll, there ought to bo very llttlo expense connected with It thereafter. Pipes loading to room In w Ihtocrhh octnwn.o BTAOINSHR In which there Is not sufllclont boat In wlntor to prevont their froozlnp. Bhould bo so nrrnngod that tho wntr OBn bo shut off from them by valves noar tho tank. Should thoro bo anv danger of the tank's freezing In se verely cold weather. It can bo omptlod at night by oponlng tho valves of the plpoa which carries it to drain or out let. Tho tank can be roftlled and so rapidly In tho morning that there need be ntvaunoyance because of lack of water for household use. If "the man who attonds to things" starts the engine when he goes to tho basement to see to tho fire, there will bo plenty of water on hand when the people in the kitchen get around to make use of It, Tho convenience of running water in each room Is never fully appreciated until ono puts such a system In operation. Then ho will wondor how ho ever got along with out It. E, Rexford In Outing. Reducing Distances Between Pointy. Between New York and Chicago tho air lino distance is less than 700 miles. By tho shortest rail route, tho Pennsylvania's, tho distance is 911 miles; by tho next shortest, the Now York Contrnl, It is 960 miles. Tho Pennsylvania via Pittsburg switgs 100 miles south of tho straight line, while tho Contrnl reaches nearly 150 miles north of it on tho route via Albany and Buffalo. According to tho Railway Ago, "these great competitors have boon planning and working to rcduco tho mileage, as woll as tho grades and alignment, between their principal termini, and it begins to scorn possi ble that some time tho fastest trains between New York and Chicago will leavo both Pittsburg and Buffalo out of their route. Tho Pittsburg Ga zetto sounds tho warning that ero long tho pooplo of that city will wake up and find that Pittsburg Is not oven a way station for tho mngnlil cent through llyors botwoen New York nnd Chicago, nnd Buffaloninns will awako. to tho same fact with re gard to tho New York Centrnl. Tho Pennsylvania, tho Gazette callB to mind, Is buying Its rights of way for a now lino which will mako a short cut from Its lino cast of Pittsburg to Its lino west. By constructing about thirty miles of rond to connect exist ing branches It may havo a now route from Tipton, near Altoona, via Mayport and Red Bnnk, to Enon, on tho Fort Wnyno lino which will savo fourteen miles over tho Pitta burg route and avoid heavy grades and tho congestion of that busy city's tormlnnls. Tho Now York Central can do bettor than thnt when It com pletes tho costly Clearfield-Franklin lino of ;07 miles, now well along, provldod that from WUHamsport to New York, over 300 miles, It uses tho Reading-Jersey Centrnl tracks or acquires a lino of Its own. It may thus savo some eighty miles over tho Albnny-Buffalo route and roduco the New York-Chicago distance to less than 900 miles. Theso nro possibili ties. Whether or not thoy are soon to be realities is an open question." o Tobacco Workers May Strike. Louisville, Ky., Aug. S.
