This unique Invention ban been muck needed to complete the lustl tut' equipment for properly Instruct ing the unfortunate pupils. The preen, or metallic typewriter, for such n term More prierly de scribe it, wee received last week, nnd is the first ever brought to an Oregon institution. It wnn invented by Superintendent Hall, ef the Illinois School for the Blind. It prints what la known as the Braille alphabet,, which usee a combination of six data, each combination representing a let ter. The press Is made of solid east steel. It has six keys, each of which, when pressed, eaueee n det to fait into po sition, nnd these nre fereed through a sheet of nine, making tho letter or combination desired. After the nine, which may be of varying sine, is cov ered with the characters, it is taken out of the machine, a wet piece of prepared paper placed over it, nnother layer of sheet metal put on top of the paper, and the whole subjected t pressure The paper, after the opera tion, in Indented by the letters which hnd been punched In the nine sheet After the paper ha thoroughly dried It m flnlobed nnd m found to be eov ered with n maea ef ritWed dole, ar ranged In characters, that represent letters and words. Practice enables even one of the scholar of the inetltutton to operate the machine with great rapidity, nnd while no one has yet Attained a very high degree of proficiency, Superin tendent Jones states that f, is possible to work with the prees almost as rap Idly aa a stenographer usee a type writer. Tho acquisition fills a greatly needed place at the blind school. Tho library ean now lte Increased without great cost, for lmeka oan be printed by the pupils. Hitherto any addition to the library wan secured in the Hast, at nn expense of from tt.00 a volume up to an indefinite sum, governed, of course, by tho sine of the book.
