(San Francisco Chronicle.) Tho volcanic charactor of Modoc county has up to the present timo, been a bar to its prospecting for minerals. Its forbidding lava beds and oxtinct era tors and disturbed rock formations have discouraged tho mining prospec tor in tho past, and through nil the years of mining nctlvlty in other parts of tho state tho county has been neg lected' as a mineral Held and surrcn dercd almost exclusively to tho stock raiscrnnd tho herder of shoop. But tho accidental discovory of a rich vein of gold-benrlng oro In tho . neighborhood of Fort Bidwell is a startling revela tion to mining men goncrally and It bns brought Modoc county suddenly con spicuous into tho public gazo as a promising field for exploitation ono possessing great possibilities. It is barely possiblo that Modoc county may pnss through an experlenco similar to that which Central and South or n Novnda has boon having dur ing tho past two years or so. Prior to tho accidental discovery of tho minor allzcd outcropplngs at Tonopah by But ler, that wholo section of our neigh boring stato was shunned by tho mining prospoctor. And yot tho gold and sil ver bearing bolts of Tonopah, Gold field and othor Novada mining dlstrictc which havo boon exploited slnco the valuo of Butler's discovery Iwenro known havo been tho wondor of tho mining world. Tho Comstock lodo In its best days was not as productive as soino of tho veins opened in, these now mining camps. Tho gold-bearing voln located in Mo doo county, as tho result of tho acci dental discovery of a pleeo of rich float by a 10-ycnr-old shophord whllo tonding his flock, is, according to all accounts, as rich as anything found In any of tho now Nevada mining camps. A plcco of rock picked up at random is said to havo assayed $2552 to tho ton. Tho ledgo is said to be four foot wido and has boon traced along tho flank of Mount Bidwell, through tho outcrop pings, for a distanco of half a milo. Moreover, gold is said to havo been panned from tho dirt obtained on tho top of tho mountain, which la an ox tinct volcano, nt a point a thousand foot nbovo this rich ledgo, which Indi cates tho prc3cnco of olhur sources of tho precious motal at tho highost olova tion of tho peak. Othor ledges havo also boon found on tho mountain and thoso havo b(on stnkod off for future cxpiorntion. A good vein of copper and froo gold hns also boon uncovered by it fortunato blast put into an abandoned1 tunnel, in tho mountain which was drlvon nt soma poriod long Your nnmo is on tho list of those in vltod to oxamlno our showing of gro corlos. No arguments will bo neces sary to assure you that tho values of forod are good, and that tho quality is the best. Modoc county may, thoroforo, loom up in tho noar futuro as a largo mineral producer, contributing to tho testimony borno by Tonopah, Goldflold, Bullfrog, Kawich nnd Bandsburg that it is not safo to condomn any section in theso Western States as non-mineral benring because tho surface Indications and tho geological formations do not happon to accord with tho accopted theories of geologists and minors.
