On this Pacific coast naturo has in truth lavished the best of her treas ures in giving it a 'climate unsur passed by any other land. Hero tho farmer fears not that tho winter's snow will deatroy and damage his pos sessions, nor in summer that drouth may ruin what ho has planted. Tho outdoor laborer works all tho year through caring not for tho seasons. Thus it is wo havo reason to rejoico more than tho inhabitant of tho East, Arbor day 13 near at hand and with its approach we snould endeavor to show our gratitudo to bountiful naturo by giving hor the help which oven she at times needs. It may be that wo cannot do much; but the littlo wo nro able to do, oven if it bo but tho clean ing of our lawn, will show thnt wo havo tho right spirit. This day, set aside by official act of tho stato for the planting of trees and tho beautifying of naturo in general, was first thought of by J. S. Morton and it was ho wfio developed tho idea until now it has become a national custom. Julius Sterling Morton, founder of Arbor day, was born in Jefferson coun ty, Now York, April 22, 1832. Ho was of Puritan stock, his ancestors having come from England on tho Littlo Ann, the first ship after the Mayflower. His parents removed to Michigan when tho son was still a baby. Ho was sent to good private schools and somlnarles, nnd later to tho Michigan university, but was graduated at Union college, New York, in 1854. Immediately after completing his college course ho was married and removed to Nebraska, aud in tho following year choso Nebraska City as his permanent home, locating pre-emptor upon a claim half a mile square, ndjaceut to tho town. This en tato grew into tho beautiful Arbor Lodge, so familiar to all lovers of tho holiday founded by Mr. Morton, and tho home of the remainder of his life. An extract from tho school law in relation to tho observance of Arbor day by the schools, of tho stato reads thus: Section 62. Tho second Friday in tho nfternoon in April of each year shall hereafter bo known throughout tho stato as Arbor day. Section 03. In order thnt the chil dren in our public schools shall assist in tho work of adorning tho school grounds with trees, and to stimulate, tho minds of children towards the benefits of tho preservation and perpet uation of our forests nnd tho growing of timber, it shall be tho duty of tho authorities in every public school dis trict in this state to auomblu tho pu pils in their ehnrgo on tho nbovc day in tho school building or elsewhere, as they may deem proper, and to provide for and conduct, under the general su pervision of city superintendents, teacher?, county superintendents, ami directors, or other school authorities having the general charge and over sight of tho public schools In each city or district, to havo and hold such ex crciso as shall tend to onuourago tho planting, protection nnd preservation of trees nnd shrubs, and an nuquaint anco with tho best methods to be adopted to accomplish suoh results. Section 04. Tho superintendent of public instruction shall, from year to year, under and by direction of the stato board of education, have power and proscribo from time to time a A LESSON IN LAUNDEY WOBK. Phone71 course of exercises nnd instructions in tho subjects hereinbefore mentioned, which shall bo adopted and observed by tho said public school authorities on Arbor day. This movement for improving tho school yards throughout tho state means much to all of us, in that tho children who witl in tlmo bo tho men and women of tho futuro aro thus In thoir early youth taught to havo a love for tho good and tho beautiful in nature. It is Warner who says in speaking on this same subjoct that "To own u bit of ground, to scratch it with a hoc, to plant scc,da and watch their renewal of life, this is tho com monest delight of tho race, and tho most satisfactory thing ono can do," and indeed what toil or what task could be nobler than that of ho who tills tho soil; for upon tho farmer tho wholo world doponds for sustononco and Ar bor day of all days thon, is tho timo wo should obsorvc. In recognition of his dependeuco on tho soil tho Emporor of China annunlly plows n furrow with his own hand, and in tho same signifi cance are tho provision In tho anciont law of Moses, to givo tho land its sovou-year Sabbath, as well as to man his seventh-day for rest nnd rccrcntion. Our obsorvanco is a bottor ono, bo- cause it calls upon all, nnd especially on tho imprcssiblo lonrncrs in tho schools, to join in tho duty which wo owo to tho earth and to all mankind, of doing what each of us can to pro servo the soil's fortuity, and to pre vent, as long as possible, tho carjb, from which wo havo our being, from becoming worn out and wholly bald or bare. 'Tis sweet, in tho green spring, To gazo upon tho wnkonlng fields around; Birds in tho thicket sing, Winds whispor, waters prattlo from tho ground, A thousand odors rise, Breathed up from blossoms of a thou sand dyos. s Shadowy, nnd eloso and cool, Tho pino and poplar keep their qulot' nook; Forovcr fresh and full, Shino at their feot, tho thlrst-lnvitlng brook; And tho soft hcrbago soems Spread for a place of banquets nnd of dreams. , Bryant. Don't Borrow Trouble. It ia a bad habit to borrow anything but tho worst thing you can possibly borrow, is trouble. When sick, sore, heavy, weary and worn-out by tho pnlns nnd poisons of dyspopala, bilious nesH, Bright 'a diseaso, and similar in ternal disorder, don't sit down nnd brood over your symptoms, but fly for relief to Electric Bitters. Hero you will find stiro nnd permnneut forgetful ncRs of nil your troubles, am your body will iot bo burdened by a load of debt disease. At J. C. PorTy's drug storo. Prico 50a. Guaranteed.
