Tho report that Manngor Smirnoff of tho Putiloff Iron Works was murdered last night proved to bo incorrect. Tho report, howovor, has greatly increased tho ex citement. Father Gopon, who was re ported as being kidnaped last night is understood to bo going about today organizing tho workmen for tomor- Preparing to Check Violence. St. Petersburg, Jan. 21. Tho 'strik ers wore notiflod by the government that they havo selected a corps of 400 picked men as a bodyguard to tho czar in tho event of his agreeing to confer with their leaders. Portland, Jan. 21. After being out 40 hours tho jury in tho caso of Qcorgo Sorcnson, who was charged with offer ing a bribo to District Attorney Hall, reported that they could not ngreo and woro discharged. Charges of bribery wero mado against two of tho jurymen, A. C. Adkins, of Polk coun ty, nnd John Northrup, of Tho Dalles. In all probability indictments will bo returned this afternoon. On tho discharge of tho trial jury, Federal Judgo Bellinger instructed tho district nttornoy to take Sorenson's caso beforo tho grand jury with a view to indictment for perjury. Tho fed eral grand jury this morning examined C. T. Scoggins, Amos King, W. M. Hawk, H. B. Brown, Ed Smith, Clydo Brown, It. II.
