Tho movement against the fair was novcr seriously entertained by tho men who nro up nnd doing for tho pro gress of tho state, and if it had been successful would virtually placoOre- Igon in a class of Its own for short sightedness nnd parsimony. Tho Lewis and Clark exposition was 'designated nnd intended to bo trans Pacific and an international affair, and from tho support it has received it will be classed with tho greater eastern ex positions. 1 The stato of Oregon will hnvo ex hibits at tho fair and many counties will bo represented there, but it will J not and should not bo nn Oregon insti tution any more thnn tho St. Louis ex position was a product of the stato of Missouri. Oregon will bo ono of tho chief at- tiactlons, but tho other great section's j of the West and many of tho Eastern states will command much of tho timo and attention of tho visitors. The state 'of Oregon will needs turn to tho stato jfair, whoro its products can bo dis played, and shown to tho greatest ad vantage. Tho visitors will naturally desire to visit tho valley towns nnd cities, and mako excursions outside of Portland, and what would bo better during tho fall than tho stato fair. It will draw a largo number of people out of tho con gested conter nt Portland, and mako them feel better paid for their visit to tho West. Many of tiio towns, both in Western nnd Enstern Oregon, will hold summer fairs and carnivals to entertain and at tract tho visitors. Tho cost to tho new comer? will not bo great, nnd will, in a way, acquaint them with tho peoplo of tho stato, and afford them amusement during their Western stay. Tho stnto fair will be tho ono great Oregon fair In 1905, nnd for many years to como, nnd tho efforts of tho "kickers'' to sidetrack under any pre text will bo mot with determination from tho peoplo of the state. Tho report of tho board, published In this issue, shows thnt tho fair is on a paying basis. Careful business man agement has characterized tho manage ment this year, and thoy have started on a basis that is sound und conservative. imw W-WWmJjm mmM mm,WmmW ih a a ! ia iv jm f bi'v bjpb b WMMMTuTM.WrA'y-JVMifrMaf 1 w ikunm pjEam-MaiivmojrJsj?7 One Week's Geat Sale Of Useful Christmas Presents The Big Chicago Store, commences on Monday morning Its great sale of Xnins goods.
