'A "fro M DAILY CAMTAI. JOTJBNAL, SAXJ?M, OREGON, SATTJRDAY, NOVEMBEB 26, 1004, m - NEWfeYQRK H&LluM LOlEl Now York, Nov. 20. Though the'mnn must religiously avoid the very horso bIiow has passed into history, tho costumes seen in Madison Squaro Oar den last' 'week wero numerous enough and magnificent enough to nfford ma terial for' gossip for many weeks to come, dho remarkable feature wns fho display of furs. It might, to nil nppcarnnccs, havo been nn afternoon tea nt tho north pole, instead of an indoor unction in steam-heated Now York, Ono woman walked around tho nrena with yards of ermino falling from her shoulders to tho floor. Sho carried a mil ft of ermine, nnd her toquo was of ermino with creamy ca moiling at tho side. Another woman who remained in her box all tho ovcnlng was swathed in black velvet, hat and nil, nnd a yoko nnd half sleeves of point laco nnd a rosctto of tho samo laco in her hat were tho only touches of whito to re lievo tho rich gloom of her costume. Her furs, which werp thrown over tho ljack of her chair, wero of sable, so dark that, as ono man who knows furs, said: "Thoy are dyed or thny cost nt least $2,000." Mario Antoinctto fichus were seen on many of tho smartest frocks, nnd thoy nro1 so very becoming that tho wonder is that any frocks are mado without them in this day of mixed pe riods nnd plcturcsquo anachronisms. Ono lovely gown was of flowered silk mndo with what tho drcssmnkors call n "court skirt," opening In front to nhow a petticoat of another color. Tho bodico had n high ccinturo, nnd glit tering pnsto buttons set in tiny bows of black velvet ompmented tho front with olghtconth century dainty pre cision. Another picturo gown had a skirt of floral satin, liko tapestry, tho largo roses in another tono of pink, Tho filcirt was put in nt tho belt with un stltehod sido plaits, tho front edges rattled with point d'Alcncon. Tho under petticoat of pluk chiffon wns, over whito silk, tho lower part in graded tucks. Tho pointed bodico wns finished with n bnnd of silver braid, and tho flschu wns edged with silver braid put under lncc, headed with folds of whito und pink chiffon. Tho sleeves had doublo Hues of bcadings dividing tho largo puffs, flvo ruflloii of laco edged with silver ribbon ns a finish. Tho hat wns of doep pink plush with a, whito nnd pink plume. Anothor stunning gown wns of light turquolso nnd chiffon velvet. Tho wearer's hat wns nlso of pnlo blue a largo, round slmpo, with n somewhat painted, high crown, had two narrow bands of sablo going around It, nnd stnrtlng from tho front u full sprny of light bluo nigrotto feathers extended out boyoml tho brim. Tho bodico wns edgod with whito. laco, und tho skirt had bluo velvet nt tho bnck nnd plaited chiffon nt tho front. Her long shnpod coat, with slightly flaring sleeves, wns whito slbcllno plush cm broidorod in a heavy border of whito orchids, with touches of dull silver, nnd sho nlsb had about her neck a long, wldo Bcarf of pnlo bluo ostrich feath ers. A trnlling gown of lihiek chiffon cloth had bodico and skirt accordion plnitod. Tho former had nn unlined yoko of heavy Irish lace, and falling from it in deep points wns n bertha of tho luce. Tho chiffon cloth sleeves wero full puffs nt the top, und lmd points matching the berthn turn ing up from tho elbows, whtlo laco flounces fcjl from tho sleeves over tho long wldto gloves. A black i girdle, with lung ends, outlined tho waist. Ilor lnrgo lint wns u soft felt, with n wldo brim, tho under part of brown, tho upper part of crenm felt, nnd tin ostrich plumo of light crenm extend ed out from t.io crown over mid un der tho left brim. A costume of clh and velvet had n skirt of light sago green clotty anil tho llttlo cont of a dnrkcr shade of green velvet. Tho rnthor lurgo hat wns of groono pnnuo velvet, nnd wns trimmed, with ono wide, long ostricn idumo to mutch. A frock warn by n young girl was of ronuvo net, tho skirt nrrnnged in three overlapping sections, tho upper third of tho skirt being ono of tho sections nnd tho two lower ones form ing flounco effects. Tho largo mnuvo lint wns trlmmoil with ostrich plumes, nnd woro looped back of tho left car, tho omty tlqutiug forward over tho bodico. Eneunh of tho horso show gowns. To iloseejul to moro common thtugs, n word nbout belts am girdles may bo of interest. Tho simut bolt of this season must tono perfectly with ithor tho blouso or tho skirt, tho ouly oxceptiou being tho use of nn onion-brown leather belt with a tailored suit, which hero nnd thcro shows a touch of tho samo uro bostowml on a princess gawu or a basque bodice, pud tho shapo must harmonise with tho figure mid its wearer. Tho very short-walstod wq high round girdle. Pointed effects in tho back nro for her. For wear with tailored suits nnd shirt waists, suede or leather belts nro tho correct ihing. They como In every shnpo shown in fashionable suitings, and a deer skin belt is ono of the fan cies of the hour for tho girl who likes mannish clothes. Both theso nnd tho onion-colored belts cost from $7.50 to $10 each. A fetching effect in olnion-colorcd sucdo is finished with two buckles, tho ono in tho bnck a trlflo larger than its companion in tho front. These are of gold, built in exactly tho shape of a Napoleonic hat and studded thickly with topaz. Tho color combination of onion-brown, gold nnd topaz is won derfully harmonious. Tho girl of moro dclicnto fancy docs not use a large, heavy bucklo on her brond bolt, bu,t hns four or five very small buckles with leather straps. Theso aro very effective, but they must bo laced nnd strapped with enre, for tho buckles must mnko a perfectly straight lino down tho front. Bullet shaped buttons aro also used to finish theso broad leather belts. Tho most dcllcato leather belts arc thdso intended for liouso wear with tho light colored cloths which will bo so popular this winter. Whito suede, and nt least four tones of tho plain colors, such ns blue, hclitropo, pink, yellow, green, ns well no American Beauty red appear in tho plain stitched belt, flnishod with sircplo gold buck les. Thcro is absolutely no reason why a girl should not havo a belt ex nctly tho samo tono ns her shirt waist or- blouse. Thoy aro not good, how over, with a really dressy blouse, os thoy should glvo a tailored touch to tho costume. ESTELLE CLAIItMONT. Tho Byc-Byo Ohalr. (By Holmnn Day.) For chivalry, it is not dead, nor honor but a nnme, And bitter scorn bo meed of him who brings his mother shnme. NATTJRIt'8 METHOD of restoring waste of tissue and Impover ishment of the blood and nervous force is used when you take an alterative ex tract of herbs and roots, without tie use of alcohol, like Dr. Pierce's Golden Med ical Discovery. This vegetable medicine coaxes the digestive functions and helps in the assimilation of food or rather takes from the food just the'nutriment the blood requires. Along with its use one should take exercise in the outdoor air, get all one can of God's sunlight and air ; a mild breathing exercise practiced -each day. This "Medical Discovery" gives no false stimulation, because it does not contain alcohol or a narcotic. It helps diges tion and the assimilation of such ele ments in the food as are required for the blood. Instead of a cod liver oil, against which the already sensitive stomach will declare open rebellion, this tonic has a pacifying action upon the sensitive stom ach ana gives to the blood the fooa elements the tissues require. It main tains one's nutrition by enabling him to cat, retain, digest and assimilate nutriti ous food. It overcomes gastric irrita bility aud symptoms of indigestion, and, in this way, ever, night-sweats, head aches, etc., are done away with. Dr. rierte's Golden Medical Discovery purifies the blood and entirely eradicates the poisons that breed and feed disease. It thus cures scrofula, eczema, erysipe las, bolls, pimples, and other eruptions that mar and scar the skin. Pure blood is essential to good health. The weak, run-down, dcbilsted condition which so many people experience is commonly the effect of impure blood. Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery not only cleanses the blood of itnpurties, but it increases the activity of the blood- J 1 Fine Pfopetty OvurYi IR1$W Jl0m W - - ME7AKfflWra,.?3SSf I J "fivS. "I h.ive been a sufferer from indiges tion for some thirty years, at times," writes Mr. S. W. Jlullenax, of Cirtle ville, W. Va., "and have used medicine from several of our best physicians, which gave me only a little temporary relief. They said I could never be cured. Last winter I was stricken with the worst spell that I ever had. I suffered with such severe pains in the pit of my stomach that I could neither work nor sleep, and my weight went down from one hundred and ninety-five pounds to one hundred and sixty pounds in about two months' time. I then concluded that I would try Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. By the time the first bottle wss gone, I felt some relief from my severe suffering so continued until I had used four bottles of ' Golden Medical Discovery' and two vials of ' Pleasant Pellets.' I am .truly thankful for the great benefit which I have re ceived from your medicine, and can cordially recommend it to others." KNOW THYSHI.P.
