The fire' started nt 8:30 o'clock and destroyed tho barn, about 110 tons of hay and 800 bushels of oats. The alarm wns sounded nt about 8:15. and Chief Pugh nnd his men mhde a tine run with one engine, and tho. hose wagon, and arrived in tlmo to save tho dwelling from destruction. Tho firo probably was caused by a tramp who slept in tho bnrn last night, as ho emerged front tho building early this morning, and it is thought thnt he lighted a cigarette while in tho barn. ' Emanuel nnd Jacob Schindler conduct the Fnlrmount dairy, and tho loss s a heavy ouo on them. Their entire win ter's feed wns in tho buildiug, and the insurance carried by them was only $900. The firo department made one of the prettiest runs ever witnessed in tho city, the horses hauling the heavy apparutus over tho South Commercial street hills at break-neck speed. This is tho first fire to occur in the seventh ward since it wns admitted to tho city, and had it not been part of Greater Salem tho Schindlor residence also would undoubtedly burned, and, owing to the slight wind that was blowing very probably one of the worst fires in tho history of Salem would havo resulted.
