Plucky Sea Fighter Quits Active Service in the Navy Admiral Watson Retires. Washington, D. C. Aug. 21. With the retirement today of Rear Admiral John Ci Watson tho navy loses ono of its ablest and most honorable and useful ofilcers. Ills career from tho date of his; graduation from tho naval academy in I860, has boon full of honors and credit, and few ofilcers of the navy have seen more active sorvice. Admiral Watson belongs to a fam ily that has distinguished itself In peaco and war sinco tho early days of tho American republic, llo was born in Frankfort, Ky August 24, 1842. His father, Edward Howe Watson, was a skillful physician of the old school, and his mother, Sarah Ijoo Crittenden Watson, was a daughter of John Jordan Crittenden, tho famous Kentucky stntesman, rival of Henry Clay, governor at ono timo of Kentucky, and attorney gen eral In William Henry Harrison's cabinet, Admiral Wilson entered tho naval academy In 185C and graduated four years later, standing high In his class. Ho was immediately assigned to tho rank of midshipman, and Aug ust 1G, 18C0, Joined tho Susquehanna In that capacity for a cruise to Eu rope, While ho was abroad tho civil war broke out and he returned at once to take part in it. Ho was commissioned a lieutenant In 18C2, nnd, in January, 18C4, ho was made flag lieutenant to Farrngut. Ho was in tho battles of New Or leans, Mobile Bay, Vlcksburg and Port Hudson. In a letter to rnls son Ioyal, during tho war, Admiral Far laguth tclla him of young Nelson's volunteering to slip off and blow up a blockode runner. Among other things he says: "It was an anxious night for mo, as I am about as fond of Watson ns I am of your own dear solf."
