C The Kansas- City branch of the American Tempcranco Union strongly disap prove of the ideas of Bishop Potter, of New York, with regard to uplift ing the moral tone of tho saloon. At a meeting of tho unlpn tho matter was discussed and a letter was ad dressed to the bishop, which was sent to him. A copy of tho letter follews: "May God have mercy upon your benighted idea of striking 'tho key note of attack upon tho liquor situ ation.' You are, rather, Indorsing the koy that opens wide tho doors to hell for the arnyj of 100,000 souls who an nually leave the king's highway and stumblo Into drunkards graves. The present situation across tho water of DC bishops In the Clinch of England, tlllorles, with this shameful farce of a bishop In tho great Episcopal church,' In our own land taking a leading part In tho opening exercises of a saloon, closing tho same by singing tho dox ology, should make every professed Christian follower In this great Epis copal church hang his head In very shame." Plgmlea From African Jungle. Si. Louis, Mo., Aug. C Ono of tho most romarkablo trips In connection with tho exploitation of tho world's fair was completed when tho Rev. S. P. Verner, the Presbyterian mission ary, who brought eight pigmies out of tho Afilcnn Jungles, arrived at St. Louis. His Journey Included 26,000 miles, 800 of which wero traveled on foot through tho wilds and deserts of Central Africa. Tho trip lasted eight months. Mr. Vomer was reported killed sev eral times nnd contracted a tropical fovor from tho effects of which ho has been ill In New Orleans for several weeks. Dr. V. J. McGeo, chief of the anth ropological dopartment of tho world's fair, who talked with Mr. Verner Im mediately after his arrival here, de clared that tho mlnlstor's trip had been of Inostlmnblo valuo to science. Another version of tho drowning of a boy last week In a mountain lake In Klamath county comes from Prlneville. This time the accident Is located at Cres cent lake, which Is near Odell lake. The boy's name is given as Frank Oxford, an 18-year-old Eugene lad. This relieves but slightly the uneasi ness of Hood River people, who fear the drowned boy was the son of At torney A. A. Jayne. Mr. Jayne and his sons are long overdue from their outing trip to Odell lake. Mrs. Jayne s absent In Portland, and it seems Impossible to get hold of any infor mation that will shed light on tho mystery. The first report said it was a Jayne boy who was drowned, and it is thought Mr. Jayne Is delayed in an effort to recover the body of his son. The roport from Prlneville says lhat efforts to recover the body of the drowned boy have been unsuccessful.
