BERT RHODES SHOT Bullet Enters Comes Out Right Temple Jaw at A Portland Tough Does the Shooting and up to Date Has Not Been Caught Bert Rhodes, n son of Mr. and Mrs. I Allan Rhodes, of this city, and who : has been for some years residing In Portland, where ho worked as a bar ! tender In tho Horseshoe saloon cor ner of Third and Taylor streets, was shot through tho head on Sunday night, by a strnngor, and he is now lying at St. lVncont's hospital, Port- hand. Tho bullet entered near tho loft Maw, and came out through tho right Itemple. Tho physicians sny that, though the wound Is a fearful one, tho man will get well, unless blood poisoning sets in. Tho shooting occurred at 1 o'clock yesterday morning. Earllor in th evening two strangors, both Intoxi cated, camo into tho saloon, nnd raised n disturbance. A fight followed, and Rhodes, after knocking one of tho strangors down, ordorod both out of tho house. A little later one of thorn returned, nnd offered his hand to Rhodes, nnd said, "Lot us bo friends." Tho men shook hands nnd had a drln'.c when, as Rhodes temporarily turned his bock, tho stranger drew a gun and shot tho bartender, and immediately ran away. Tho Oregonlan this morn ing says of the case: "Bert Rhoades, bartender at tho Horseshoe saloon, who was shot through tho head yesterday morning, Lis still allvo, and tho doctors say that "ho will recovor in a short tlmo if blood poisoning does not set in. 'Tho dotectivos have learned that tho nan who fired tho shot Is Charles Jones, a stranger in tho city, but un til a Into hour last night had found no trace of him. Robert Gardnor, of this city, charged with mahom, wqs arraigned In tho circuit court yestorday. Ho pleaded not guilty, and his cose has been set for trial next Friday.
