The only Villi to take with Uort; BirMparUli SILVER REPUBLICANS To Hold a Conference at Salem October 5, A state conference of the Silver Re publicans liastbecn called to meet at Salem, October G, by National Com mitteeman Chus, Talmage, of Me Mlnnyille. FROM CLACKAMAS COUNTY. Editoh Journal: The call of the Silver Republicans for a meeting on October C, during the state fair Is sure to bo largely attended. The In terest In the state of matters polit ically has by no means abated. There Is the same desire on the part of the people at least tho larger part to remedy our present system of govern ment. While the Portland gold press; the ally and slave of the First National bank, Is crying prosperity In Its edi torial columns and printing clippings from its fellow slaves In the east, the Tribune of New York and Chicago, the New York .Evening Post, Brook lyn Eagle and others of that sub sidized ilk. its columns arc loaded with news of tho murder of helpless miners, women and children, fore closure of mortgages, failures In busi ness and evictions. It has got be a daily feature of news. 1 trust there will be a large repre sentative attendance In your town on October G, that means will be taken to unite all opposition to the gold standard and National banks, that good speakers will attend and plans be formulated to wage a winning light this winter and the coming spring to put Oregon where Washing ton and Kansas are, not with tho view of stopping there, but as a step In the direction of truly popular gov erni'iit A p!..in, simple straight forwaid platform, easily read and quickly understood is what is wanted. I would suggest the money plank as accepted by the Albany conference last J une, and most of all and our only hope, direct legislation. Tho rule of of the people first, last and always. J. D. Stevens. MilwaukieSept. 18. IN CALIFORNIA The Sacramento Bee, (Silver Re publican) has this In view: "The Bee must confess that agener al proposition whatever tends to make the light for Silver more and more a popular one Will certainly contribute to render the ultimate victory easier and quicker. To that end, the Silver Repupllcansff the Silver Democrats, tho Silver Pop ulists, the Silver Socialists, the Silver Prohibitionists all should be encour aged. Let them light under any ban ner they please. If the end be tho triumph of the cause, why should any Silver man pother his head as to what follows the hyphen? Here in California the Silver Re publican Party has been organized, the members theroof arc: First Silventes. Second Republicans. If the Republican party can be brought to the truth, 'from which it was led astray by Ilanna and the gold bugs, well and good the jSilver Re publicans will be more than -content to win the fight for the people under the old banner. If, however, that cannot be done, and the Republican leaders still con tinue to keep the party away from the straight, and narrow path, then It becomes the duty of tho Silver Re pul licaus to light the battles of silver under some other Hag. The cause of silver is paramount ovei all, and Its true friends will wl comeany assistance which contributes thereto. At Salem the Silver Republican contingent will make suitable ar rangements for the conference at Salem. Reduced rates to the state fair will entible many to come on October 5th. On the other hand, the Dubln Ex press says the cry of famine Is only a continuation of the party war cry which is raised every year that the unionists arc in olllce, and adds: "Judging fiom the past, we may hope that much of the crops doomed to destruction by the prophets of evil will be rescued and that the gen eral-yield will be much larger than expected." The Daily Independent regards the suggestion that tho Duchess of York will shortly appeal for funds in behalf of the Irish who are threatened with famine as an insult, and says: "If the country was ten times as badly off as it is likely to be. it would resent any charitable appeal to the English."
