M. Pa'rvln went to Albany today where he will make prepara tlons for the opening conservatory of music of the Albany college. Rev. W. M. Young, of Eugene, who has been visiting his cousin Engineer I. D. Drlyer, of the state house, went to Corvallls today to attend confer ence. Rev. G. W. Grannis, Rev. A. Ker shaw, Rev. and Mrs. J. II. B. Royal, Rev. John Parsons, Prof, and Mrs. L. G.Cochran and W. C. Ilawlcy went to Coryallis today to attend confer ence of the Methodist church. J. C Graham and wife, and Mrs. Reginald Le Marr, of Vancouver, and Mrs. L. J. Rhoads, of Portland, regis tered at Hotel Salem last, night. The party came to Salem on their bicycles returning to Portland on the morning boat, the roads being too muddy for bicycling. Nichols, 25 cords 99 As 80 cords were advertised for, all bids were upon motion accepted. Under the heading of petitions, Hon Tilmon Ford presented a peti tion asking the reinstatement of J. W. Gamble as policeman In this city. Upon reading of the petition the mayor stated that tbo council was not informed that Mr. Gamble had been suspended. Here a report was made by Marshal Dllley setting forth that he had suspended Mr. Gamble, which report was referred to the committee on health and police to report at the next regular meeting. A new bicycle ordinance was pre sented and read the Urst time. Same was also read second time by title. Referred to committee on streets and public property Mr. Graham moved an amendment to the insurance ordinance fixing the taxoneach company at $18 per annum, to take effect October 1, 1897. Passed. The bill passed third reading, as amended, all voting aye except Park hurst. The ordinance prohibiting boarding moving railroad trains, was read third time and voted down. After the reading of bills, the mat ter of repairing the bridge on Fifteenth street, was brought up. The street commissioner reported that the bridge was entirely washed out, and Chairman Tarkhurst re ported that the city had a bridge further down North Mill creek which could be moved to Fifteenth street, but no action was taken. The chairman of the committee on street wass empowered to employ a man to take the place of Mr. Mo Killop. The street commissioner reported that many cross walks were giving out, and suggeste d that if some of next year's road tax could bo paid ahead by the tax payers he would en deavor to put down cement crossings with such funds. A report was asked from said ofllcer as to how many cros sings he could put down in suoh a manner. Mr. Parkhurst moved that all bl the PETITION TO REINSTATE Jahri Gamble as PolI:eriiart In the! City. A young man passed two strangers on Chcmeketa street at tho rear of the store about that time, and a few moments later heard a pane of glass break after which he saw the pair run down the alley. Shortly after Chas. Atwood,- who sleeps in the store, came in and discovered the glass in tho back door broken out, and re ported the same to Mr. Barnes, tho proprietor, forthwith. This morning a pane of glass was also found to be broken out of the south window, and It looks as though tho intending thieves had been frightened from their undertakings by the breaking glass. The case was reported to Chief Dllley. and a close watch since been kept. Several suspicious looking char acters havo been seen in town for some days, and it is bellcyed this Is the work of their class. Cash for Prunes.
