L"-'W5P w. ttt.. OPS The Conditions in Oregon The Life Blood Being Slowly Sucked Away. S Farrar, one of Salcm.s buyers and also an extensive raiser, visited the north end of the county today. He was seen at tho depot this morning. Mr. Farrar thinks that tho extremely warm weather of tho past ten days had a tendency to rapidly develop tho hop lice, whereupon they left the vines. Tho only damage now to be feared is that tho lice will enter tho bur itself. Only a short time ago the New York yards were badly infested with the pest but after a season of wanu'and'fayorablo weather, tho yards nro now practically free from all lice. This may Drove the situation In the Willamette Valley also. HOPS IN LANE. In Lane county says the Eugene Guard of August 0: The army of sprayers are still at work, many growers have finished the second spruying and arc now started on the third round, while some have sprayed from three to four times, and one at least six times. Some growers that sprayed, say " that tho newly formed hops hayc the pest in them, and they are fearful that they will lose their crops. Gen erally speaking, yards that are un sprayed will go uuharyested. "We be lieve this is conceded. dcycral leading growers inform us that they believe they will be com pelled to spray up to picKing time to harvest eyen a small crop. Tho situation as we view It is ccr. tainly alarming. With the best of weather, only forty per cent of a crop ils expected. If rainy, foggy weather Should prevail for a week or more It is , doubtful if hardly any hops would be -harvested. About a dozen growers who have IFuglo hups commenced plcktng Syesterday and today. They uie light, but the qnality will probably be up to Itlie average. LICE DESTUOYKD. iTlie Eugene Register says. " The downhill road from health run dl rcctly to consumption. Consumption is thr disease of weakness. A debilitated conn) iion, irom wnaiever cause, leaves a broao road for the ber nninsr of this disease u name tells iu story It ineuia not only frii sumption of the lur.s, but consumption of the whole body. r Loss of appetite, loss of sleep, loss of nerve force, loss of flish these are fore runners and indications of consumption. The tearing down of the bodily ti'mtci should be met by a building-up process. An unusual bodily state exists, audit mutt be met with unusual measures. LINN COUNTY HOPS. Mr. G. W. Phillips, of Sclo. was in the city today. Mr. Phillips has a big yard of hops, which if saved, will mean $0,000 or $7,000 in cash in his pockets, and banco it is no wonder that he is after the hop louso red hot, in fact ho says he is sleeping only about 15 minutes a day, spending the rest of the time after the pestlverous louse. Ills present prok'ram is as fol lows: lie sprays the vines with a sjlutlonof soap and petroleum, he also Is sowing with a sower, slacked lime, over the yard; besides this he has 200 head of sheep in tho yard, .He h satisfied that with the three de vices the lice will leave; the lime rises and suffocates them, the sheep dust, makes them very weary and the spray kills them. Mr. Phillips is confident ho will have a good yield of hops" all right. Albany Democrat. POGUES' CROP BULLETIN. The warm, dry weather was of no injury, but on the other hand, was of great benefit to tho hops, nop lice thrive In warm, moist weather and are killed by hot, dry weather, 'hence the great benefit to tho hops in the killing of tho lice. The reports from the hopyards indicate a great Improve ment in rconditlons and prospects. The hop louse continues to be numer ous, but at present no wholesale de struction is imminent; but on the other hand hopgrowers are expecting a crop greatly in excess of the total product of 1896, and fully as large as the largest output heretofore made.
