A Snccessfally Assembled at Salt Lake City. AN INVITATION TO .THE EAST To Como Together On a Reason ing Basis. Salt Lake, May 16, -Last night's and this morning's trains brought in a largo number of delegates to tho silver convention whioh convenes in the Mormon tabornacle today. Delegates are present from seventeen states and territories. Tho policy outlined by prominent members of the convention Is to mako the movement a non-partisan one. Tho purpose Is to encourage men to work silver's cause without ask ing them to break any party lines. It is to be an unanimous movement for silver, independent of politics. It will not be an assault of tho west upon the east, but an invitation for the masses of the eastern peoplo to come together on a reasoning basis and give relief to the west by doing tho silver Industry Justice. A monster procession was formed at tho Knutstord hotel, headed by a platoon of police, and passed through tho principal streets, reaohiug tho tabernaclo about noon. The con vention was called to order by Gov ernor Rlckards, of Montana, and ad dresses of welcome wero delivered by Governor West and Mayor Baskin. WHERE DOES THE REFORM OOME IH? Ono result hoped for from tho now deal in Oregon politics waaaBtralghtea ing out and more satisfactory manage ment of tho publio lands of Oregon. Tho passage of the Daly bill by the legislature aud tho appointment of Mr. Tim Davenpoit as special land com missioner gavo further grounds for hope to the people that thoro might bs a breaking up of tho old land ring that has fattened .off the school lands of Oregon since many years. The appolntmont of Mr. Davenport was distastoful to many Republicans but was accepted by The Journal la tho hope that some good might com out of it to the people. We still hop and bellove thoro may. The manage ment of our publio lands is a closed book. Tho biennial legislative com mittee submits its perfunotory report, which, of course, is expected to be a whitewash. Tho peoplo would like to know what a sincere reform man like Tim Davenport is accomplishing. Tub Journal would be glad to know that at last something was being done to proteot tho peoplo.
