Ten o'clock found the dlflercnt mem bora of the court martial in tnelr seats tbls morning. It is the habit of the court' to march iu double Ale-from tbe ante-room to the court room, and aa their regular tread and step is beard in tbe hall, a bush comes over those who have gathered as spectators, for tbe very oppearance of this uniformed and dignified Bet of men inspires a feeling akin to awe. Tbe spectators are drawn here by curi osity, fortbey nearly all have au Itiler est iu the result of tbe trial. There Is no whispering or disturbance of nnj kind. These men ore here for busiuese tnd are not to be disturbed by trlll-s As the several documents are produced In evidence, and their contents rchtl.llif items are carefully noted by dillVreni members of tbe court. Every preccu tion Is taken to allow no rulitake to creep In, and tbe court martial is giving Colonel Lovell a fair trial. 1'HOBABLE LINE OF DEFENSE. In bis cross examination of Atij'itun' Roblin. yesterday afternoon, Cap'alp Butte.'fleld dropped a bint as to what trill probably lie due Hoe of defeiiRe for bis client, in trying to prove tbut the lellutiulncies charged to Col. Lovell, tro nothing less than shortages that itioulil have In-en attributed to former saptaius of tbo different cooipaoies And roasted roudly tbe negligence of secretaries and captains -of companies, whose accounts had never been properly kept. The testimony of Maj. Telfor, 6er ;eant McElroy, aud others, clearly proved tbat no strict account had been kept of tbe money received and ox ,ended in any of tbe companies, save in those of the two in Kalem. MORNING SESSION. The reading of tbe testimony, given on Thursday, took up the eutlre morn ing. Testimony Is ull in for tbe prose cution on tbe first charge, and it is ex peeled that by Saturday noon, the eutlre caEe will bo left with the court, for consideration and judgment. Sweet Cider J. A. The Sa lem public schools at present have an aggregate attendance of over 1400 pupils. Although' thcro are not as many registered with tbe clerk, by one hundred, tbo attendance runs fully that ahead of the attendance at this time last year. The only conclusion to draw is tbat this year there is a closer attendance of those registered. The schools were never larger nor In better trim than at the present time. i A Bin Difference. There is a big difference in ways of doing buslnee. This afternoon, shortly after i!M o'clock, the alarm of fire was tolled; iiuui ma luwn iivar iiiu unuit iiuni and it did not tulte 1 ng to locate it, as V 0 smoke was freely rolling up from the roof above Tho Spa candy store on State street. Mail Carrier Geo. Hatch and Constable Wain made the discovery and sounded the alarm. Only a smtll blaze was visible on the roofnf Tloca block, but it Is evident that the fire had been smouldering for xiime time. No fire had been bad iu that flue since this forenoon, and it is generally believed that the fatal litmus must have originated from that -oil roe. The fire department was promptly on baud and in an Incredibly snort time they had a stream of water on tho roof. No great damage was done ex cept to tbe roof. However tbe amount of water necessary to do tbe work will ciuse some slight damage ineldi the building. Tho tenBile strength of wrought iron rods varies as tho square of tho diameter. As I stepped forward tho horso seemed to have heeu struck with a new idea. Ho lifted his head and for a moment looked steadily up the street iu front of him. Suddenly his whole aspect changed. Ho shook himself, gave a snort of satisfaction, as if he had discovered what ho had been looking for, and with his head high in the o.ir and his ears pricked up he mdved briskly forward. Much interested I followed him.
