Hops Galore, Salem is the important hop growing center of Oregon. A large portion of the hops grown in the stato find buy ers in this town. Most of the large hop dealers in the East have agents here. In this re gard Portland Is not to be compared In importance, to this city. The crop this year baa been very good compared with former years but I think the qual ity will fall a trifle below the average. Farmers are selling rather than storing and within the month the entire crop will be moved. They will generally be shipped to the East by rail though a few will remain on the coast. The price Is surprisingly low but J cannot even hazard a guess what the future will depelop." Several small lots have been bought this week from about Turner and other points, at C cents. The new part has been pushed so vigorously that the walls and inter ior mason work are all up, and it will be roofed irr before the end of next week, Every detail has been scrupulously su perior, and with the improved sanitary arrangements, It will prove both satis factory and attractive. At noon today there were only 321 convicts in the stato prison, a lower number than hud bceu touched for many months. Elver Intelligence.
