From tlio point where tbo Grand riv er leaver tho plateau and plunges into tho deep pool below the falls its course tor 25 miles id through ono of tho most lomarkable canyons in tho world. From tho appoarunco of tho Bides of this gorge and tho zigzag lino of tho river tho in dications are that tho stream has slow ly forced its -way through ( this rocky chasm, cutting its way ha'ck, foot by foot, from tho edgo of tho plateau to tho present position of tho falls. Recent in vestigators estimate that a period "of 0, 000 years was required to form tho gorgo below Niagara falls, or,.inpther words, that it has taken that timo for tho falls to recodo from their former po sition at Queenstowu Heights to thoir present location. If it has taken this length of timo for tho Niagara falls to make their way back a distanco of seven miles by the erosivo power of tho water acting on a soft shale rock supporting a stratum of limestono, tho immensity of timo involved by assuming that the Grand river canyon was formod in tho Bamo way iH so great that tho mind fal ters in contemplating it, especially when it is recognized that tho escarpment of tho Labrador falls is of hard gnoissio rock. Henry G. Bryant In "Journey to tho Grand Falls of Labrador. " A Clever Scheme. An ingenious woman in Florida has a method of getting a list of names of persons scattered throughout the coun try, which list is availablo as a com mercial commodity, as advertisers in various lines of trado pay a fair price for addresses by tho thousand. The Florida lady sends out letters to promi nent newspapers in tho north offering to send freo of charge, on tho receipt of a 2 cent stomp, specimens of southern plants, mosses, etc Tho 2 cent stamp pays for her troublo, as sho pays only 1 cent for postage on tho return package. The list of names sho collects grows year by year and has an increasing selling value. Many persons have wondered why this lady was so thoughtful and generous in making tho offers which tho papers print gratuitously. Thoy will un derstand it better when they begin to receive circular and letters, not only from tho Bellers of curios in Florida, but from tho retailers of books, patent medicines, hair dyes; etc., from all ovor tho Union. Prance's Army of Good looking Men. It is stated that every year tho con ceils do revision examine from 850,000 to 870,000 young men. Of these, 82,000 are exempted as unfit for any kind oi duty, 88,000 are classed, in the auxiliary departments owing' to defects which render them unfit to serve in the differ ent regiments, while upward of 05,000 are sent homo to await afresh examina tion. The men who aro accepted for regimental duty and those who con tract voluntary engagements in France amount to from 210,000 to 220,000 per annum. It may be quoted, by tho way, that "extreme ugliness" is on tbo libt of tho various defects and infirmities dis qualifying men for military service, among which also figure short sight, stammering, Blight lameness rum au excess or tho reverse of tho regulation number of fingers and toes. Paris Cor respondent Unfamiliar VUh tho Bible. Mr. John T. Gray, clerk of the court of common pleas, began to issue the an nual licenses on Monday, and including yesterday about $ 2-1, 000 had been, re ceived. The clerks were dazed yesterday when a woman applicant for a license picked up tho Bible from tho counter and inquired what book it was. When Mr. Sylvanus Gray found on inquiry that the woman did not know the na ture of the book, ho wrapped tbo Bible in paper and made her & present of it Baltimore Bon. They Soothe. Never Irritate. Some people have a prejudice against plasters, because, as they think, thoy burn und blister. That Is true of many, but not ot Allcock's Porus Plasters. They ndver irritate the sklu, butal va8 have a soothing ellect. They ure useful In case of any local pilu and as u rule will bring immediate iflief. If thpy do not, It Is because the trouble lias been allowed to becomo bo serious that no external remedy will reach it, and the chances are that auy treatment will fail. For stitches in the side, weakness or larueuess of the back, stillness of the joints, Allcock's Porous Plasters have been proved again and again to be not only a relief, but a cure.
