A prop er appreciation bos also been shown In many cases where corporations havo shown a disposition to treat tho people fairly. A good service and compliance in a reasonable de gree with charters granted is all that Is asked. The people ask only fair play of auy corporation, and they are prepared to respect their rights and deal generously with them Wo are led to those remarks bv tho report that tho new electric light company is "equalizing" rates, and are advancing the rates for'llghta to consumers. Thero la a disposition on the part or some or the corporations in Salem not to do the fair Jhlng by the peo ple. In other words, they seem wil ling to exact high rates and even to raise their rates and supply an infe rior service. The publlo goneratly will condemn this as a wrong policy. The poonle are willing to pay fair prioes if they can get a fair service. But to pay for what they do not get makes thqm "tired" and they register a com plaint at the newspaper office, when they should seek to enforco their rights In a justice court, But fqw cltizons like to bring suit agalnslj a corporation. Give the people fair play. Give them what you agree to and above all do not attempt to exact advances vruou luuuuijug a uerviuo open to criticism, NORTHWEST NEWS. Uhtotfm IlwWai,lMM(Hmt,F(. 4-ly-flw From Secretary Mohjer'd last re port it appears that tho spring and winter wheat crops will not full short of 72,000,000 bushels. On an acreage of 4, 000,000 acres, this yield amounts to about 18) bushels per aero and is worth,at68 cents a bushel. f 10.73 an average acre, $1,83 higher than the average value in tho ten years from 1880 to 1800, according to the statistics of tho United Htatos Department of Agriculture. It also amounts to $3,14 an aero more thun the highest estimate we havo ever seen of tho cost of producing an acre of wheat, or an aggregate net profit of 112,600,000. Mr, Lowolllng will be interested to know that this net profit is Just about the amount of the annual interest churgoon tho farm mortgage debt of 1800. Last year Secretary Mohler estlmnted that, reserving 13,000,000 bushels for food and seed, our farmers bad 40, 000,000 bushels to sell, worth $31, 600,000. Reserving 13,000,000 bushels tills year, they will have 00,000 000 bushels to sell, worth 135,000,000, It was estimated last year that we raised 137,000,000 bushels of corn and exported 34,000,000 bushels worth $10,000,000. This year we ex pect to gather 125,000,000 bushels at least and export 20,000,000, worth 18,000,000, With corn selling for vi cems mere is a pront in its pro duction of 20 cents, or tho euor- rnous sum of 125,000,000 on this year's crop, as against but f 1-1,000,-000 last year. On these two crops, therefore, If the farmers last year made, as it was estimated, 127,000, 000 la net profits, they will make this year on tbe same crops over 17,000,000. Assuming that oats, broom eorB, 6x, swUir beans, hay, potatoes, kortietiltural products, garden produeta, borvea aud mules, and tbe produeta of live stock bring as tuueu this year as last, our farm em will olear (torn the year's work f 10,000,000 won than last year; and 18W ItMilf wm W of woiicierftM lprHy.
