Dorlng the formnlf exercises of dedicating the world's fair buildings 125,000 people will be crowded Into the manufacturers buildings at Jack son Park, the largest number ever assembled under one roof. The handling of bo many thousands mid Betting them into the building and out of It without accident has been a serious question. It is believed that the plan Juit-npproved Is the best that could be devised. The manufacturers building, in which all these thousands will as semble, stretches along the shore of LakeMlclilgiiu for 1088 ftct. The building fs 787 feet wide. Only four entrances linvo been provided, but these are wide enough for half a dozen tally-ho coaches to drive In abreast It is the intention to provide seats for 00,000 or 05,000 visitors and these will be arranged in the center of the building. Tho largo area reserved for seats will be surrounded by promenudes about 220 feet wide. Without crowding them In the least it is estimated that 85,000 per sons can thus find places. A raised platform will be built on the east side of the building to ac commodate about 3000 diotingutstiud guests, including Pietddcnt Harri son, his cabinet, members of con gress and goveruois of b tit tea. From an extension of this platform on a Btmlclrculur rostrum President Har rison will deliver hlsaddress, and al so W. C. P. Breckinridge and Cnauncoy M. Depew. At the south end of tho building, 800 feet away, on another raised platform, a chorus of 5000 voices will bo mabsed to shout national anthems and sing the dedicatory ode. Down in front of the platform from which the orators will speak, seats will we arranged for 760 newspaper men. Just In front of the center of this platform tubles will be placed for ten official stenographers, and on either sldo will be tables for the United and Associated press, each bolng ullowed chairs for twelve men. Major Handy believes that tho ar rangements for the press arc more complete tuun have ever been made before. Each newspaper mun will huvo ample room to work. Major Handy has already received application for more than 1500 chairs for correspondents The New Yoi k papers ure evidently allvo to tho im portance of the occasion, for they will Bend 104 correspondents to Chicago this week. One big morn ing paper in Now York has called for Beats for eight men. In another room back of tho stund fifty typewriters will be at the dis posal of out-of-town correspondents, no charge being made for their work. Ample telegraph facilities will be provided. Back of the staud from which the oratlonB will be delivered a lunch room hot been arranged. In this tho distinguished guests will be serv ed with a light reflection after the big procession reaches the park and boforo the dedicatory exercises prop er bcglu. At about 2 o'clock Geers gave Hal a mile in 2:21, later another in 2:18, and then, an hour later, accompanied by a runner, he started him on a tilt against the watch. The quarter wos reached In 0:321, and the half In 1:01, and every one knew that the record was safe that trip. From the half Pointer quickened his strIde,comiug to the third quarter in 31 seconds, and the lust, which was a straight away, In 31. The mile was made in 2:00. About 30 minutes later he started again, this time getting a perfect send-oft, and every fraction of the mile showing accelorutad speed. The runner was a length back. He flushed past the quarter In 32 seconds, the half In 1:03, nud the three-quarters in 1:34. As Hal's nose reached the wire a mighty shout went up, for hundreds of watches stopped ut 2:05. Several new recruits had joined us one a tall, gaunt Irishman, who had ovi dently been tempted to enlist as a substitute, uot thinking ho would so soon bo sent to the trout. He was very nervous aud ill at ease, show nig tho white feather long before he smclled tho smoko of bat tle. OouiHjnading iu the distance seemed rieaily to paialyze him, and when three of our pickets wero shot dead at their posts his face usuned the color of a corpse. The boys wero cruel enough to toll him thi-j was a common occur) once and that he would never ictuni to camp if he went on picket duty. Military tactics to him were yet a blank, and always would he, for that matter, as rue uriumaster never lived who could make a soldier of Mike Degan. Ho was placed in tho reur, imdas it' was my duty to pro vent straggling I had hard work to keep him in lino. Every now and then "click I" would go u riflo in the hands of some sharpshooter am bushed upon the mountains, and an other of our gallant boys lying stark and still along tho roadside told us how trao had been the aim. These silent messengers of our con stant danger wero u great trial to Mike, and he would shako his head and exclaim, "It's meself that would be wishing I was out of this I" Wo had marched ahout a mile amid gloom and silouce when tho ominous order, "Haiti" was given. I stood near Mike when tho command was received, and a moro pitiahlo looking specimou of manhood I have never seen as he exclaimed, "Why uu vu uu Hiuppmg neie, surr "Well, Miko," I replied, "wo have either got to slop here or someone will stop us farther on," for I had learned but a fow minutes before that a reconnoitering parry had dis covered danger ahead; consequently we had to change our line of inaich. After a halt of several minutes, which seemed hours to us, we start ed at tho order, "Forward march." Then came tho command, "Left ob lique." Miko, now several naces behind his conn ades, gazed at mo in silent awe, throw down his musket and rushed wildly to tho roar and eu doavored to extract a hugo stone from its frozen foundation. "Get back with him there,"! exclaimed; "have you troao orazvi" "Rn c. " replied Mike, "didn't yces hear tho cap'n'ji orders to liftahreek. Divil a breek I boo at ull, and I thought a stone might do, for we'll all ho mur dered, ut we will." It was with difficulty that I could suppress laUKhteratMika'sdonnUinn of the captain's orders. I did not seo Miko again for several hours, when ho approached me, look ing eo wan and weary that I really felt sorry for him. Ho had a white handkerchief tied about his thioat. "Sure, stir," said ho. "I'd loiko to go to tho ambu lance, for I'vo a had pain in me troto and mo knees oro that stiff I can't bo ubiug them at all. at all." I &ent him to tho suruonn wi,n must huvo placed him on tho sick list and hrut him to the ambulance train, but Miko evidently lost his way, for ho was reported as found dead besido tho road with a bullet hole in his head. Tho white handkerchief had mado a good tarcrut for somo rJmmsiinnto,.
