During an inundation of tho Brah maputra river tho man who took tho holm of tho steamer at daylight waa astonished to see n largo tiger sitting in a crouching attitudo upon tho rudder. A heavily laden flat or bargo was lashed upon each side of tho steamer, and tho sterns of theso vessels projected boyond tho deck of tho steamor right a-ud left. Tho decks of tho barges wero only thrco feet abovo tho water, and tho tiger, alarmed by a shout from tho helmsman, mado a leap from tho rudder to tho nearest vessel. In an instant all was confusion. Tho terrified natives fled in all direc tions beforo tho tiger, which, having knocked over two men during its panic stricken onset, bounded off tho flat and sought security upon tho deck of tho steamer alongside. Scared by its now position and by the shouts of tho people, it darted into tho first hola it could discover. This was tho open door of tho im mense paddlo box. Tho captain rushed to tho spot and closed tho en trance, thereby boxing tho tiger completely. Tho door boing well secured, there was no danger, and an ornamental air hole in tho paddlo box enabled tho captain to obtain u good view of tho tiger sitting upon ono of tho floats. A shot through his head put an end to his careor, and as the men who had been knocked over wero moro frightened than hurt, tho affair was concluded in a way to satisfy all parties except tho tigor. Youth's Companion. Cures for Rheumatism. In Michigan a double cedar knot is carried in tho pocket to cure rhou matism, and in Now Hampshire a man carried a gall from tho steins of goldeurod for tho same disease. A small white grub is in tho gall and ho thought as long as tho grub re mained alivo no rheumatism could get hold of him.- Ilickory nuts, Iho buckoyo and its cousin, tho horso chesnut, which brings good luck in Now Jeraoy, nro other foes to rhou matism in different localities, Somo people wear a strango ring mado of a potato with a bolo bored througli it for rheumatism, and othors carry a plain potato in tho pocket. Tho charm is moro potent if tho potato has been stolon. Al most anything seems to havo rheu matism fighting properties, for in southern Michigan a pebblo in tho pockot serves to ward it off. Kansas City Journal. A Sure Curo for a Ilalky Horse, An officer of tho polico detail said recently: "Wlion I was a mounted policeman I learned of a most hu mane and kind motliod of curing a bailey horso. It not only nover fails, but it does not givo tho slightest pain to tho animal. Whon tho horso re fuses to go tako tho front foot at tho fotlock and bond tho log at tho kneo joint. Hold it thus for threo min utes, and lot it down and tho 'horso will go. "Tho only way in which I can ac count for this effectivo mastery of tho horso is that ho can think of only ono thing at atimo, and having mado up his mind not to go, my theory is that tho bonding of tho leg takes his mind from tho original thought." Qur Animal Friends. When) tho Sun Shines Mont. The southern coasts aro tho most sunny ones, if wo oxcopt tho Channel islands, as represented by Jorsoy, whoro alono ono-half tho possible amount of rodianco is registered for May and August. Tho oust coast of Britain is also decidedly sunny. In tho summer und early autumn Iro land Bharcs with tho west coast of Scotland tho reputation of persistent ly clouded skios, but later on, toward November, tho obsorvatory in Phoe nix park, Dublin, records tho greatest average amount of sunshino for that month naraoly, 28 por cent. In tho metropolis, as might be expected, tho record ia bad. Chambers' Journal. nut Mil r.xietiuji. Littlo Nieco Do you eat tobacco! Undo Wayback No, I only chow it. Tho island of St. Thomas, in tho West Indies, has near its shores tho Ship rock, which appears, when seen from a short distnnco, almost pre cisely liko a full rigged ship under canvas. If the sky is clouded and tho atmosphere hazy, tho illusion is remarkable. M. M. Ballou repeats in "Equatorial America" tho story of a mortifying mistake mado by a French corvette while cruising in theso latitudes. It was at a timo whon tho buccaneers were making great havoc with legiti mate commerce in tho West Indies. It seems that tho coast was par tially hiddon by a fog whon tho cor vette mado out this rock, and, sup posing it to bo a ship under sail, fired a gun to leeward to bid hor heavo to. Of courso there was no responso to tho shot, and tho Frenchman brought his ship closor, and cleared tho decks for action. Satisfied that ho had to do with a powerful adversary, ho discharged tho whole of his starboard armament into tho supposed ship looming through tho mist. Tho corvette went about, and prepared to deliver her port guns in a similar manner. Then tho fog slowly dispersed, and tho rock smiled grimly on its assailants. An ISxperienco with a I.oon. Captain John Hea, of tho Chicago Towing company, had an oxporienco with a lako loon Boveral years ago. His tug was lying outside tho harbor lato ono afternoon waiting for a tow to como along. Just at nightfall tho crew caught sight of a loon and re solved upon a chaso. Around and around wont the loon, swimming and flying, always making tho circle smaller. Thoy tired him out and Captain Hea had piko polo ready to striko, but something occurred to change tho mind of tho wholo crow in an instant. "Suddenly raising itself in tho wa ter," said Captain Hea, "and stretch ing out ita long neck, that bird gave out a cry of distress and anguish that seemed human, and at times super natural, asconding to the very clouds. A squall swooped down on tho lako from tho north just at this juncture and our tug boing five miles down tho lako wo made a run for tho har bor. Wo mado bad weather of it, tho tug shipping sovoral soas, but wo finally got into port safely. Just as wo rounded tho piors that loon circled around tho pilot house with a solemn croak and thon winged its way back to sea again." Chicago iioralcl. Treatment for Suako llltes. Sir Joseph Fayror offers tho fol lowing suggestions for tho treatment of snako bites: Let tho patient bo quiet. Do not fatiguo him by oxor tion. When or oven before symp tons of poisoning mako their appear auco, givo cau-do-luco or liquor am monia or carbonate of ammoniaor oven hotter than thoso, hot spirits and water. There is no occasion to intoxicate tho person, but givo it freely and at frequent intervals. If ho becomes low, apply sinopisms and hot bottles, galvanism or olectrogal vanism over tho heart and dia phragm. Cold douches may also bo useful. Encourage and cheer tho patient as much as possible. As to local effects, if there bo great pain, anodynes may bo applied or administered, and anti septic poultices to romovo sloughs; collection of matter must bo opened. Other symptoms aro to bo treated on gonoral Burgical principles. This, I boliovo, is tho sum and substance of what wo can do. Tho Ladder Dwarf. "Among tho strango and weird demons and bogies which uro boliov ed by minors to haunt tho workings under ground not tho least horriblo is tho 'Laddor Dwarf,' " said a for mer prospoctor, "I nover saw tho creature myself, but ho is described as hunchbacked, with n short body, largo head and enormously long and powerful arms. In fact, ho resom blea an exafrgoratod gorrilla. His favorite trick ia climbing tho ladders by moans of which tho miners loavo tho mines, raising himself with his long arms, and as ho passes tho rungs kicking thorn out ono by ono. no & supposed to always do this just boforo an accident of somo kind in tho mino."
