Old Folks' Whist Club. The club was royally entertained last evening at the residence of Dr. Richardson, all the club aud several Invited guests being present. The evenjng was passed in conversation and "drive whist," and the award ing of the prizes for the first and second best players created a round of amusement and laughter. A bounteous lunch was served and about 11 o'clock the club adjourned, after announcements for the evening had been made. It is rumored that with the collection of prizes already bestowed, and others in prospect of delivery at the next aud future meeting, a grand museum aud menagerie is to be established under the patronage and control of the club. The receipts from admission, etc., to be applied to some charitable purpose. How much truth there may be in the rumor, we are not prepared to say. State Encampment. The prep arations are going forward for the Grand Army gathering that If to be held In Salem Thursday and Friday of this week. The committee re quest a general decoration of busi ness and public buildings on that occasion, and it is expected that Salem will show the veterans of the Union and Mexican armies the same attention that it is customary on such occasions elsewhere. The state encampment should be made the most of to advertise our public spirit and patriotism. African Church-. Rev. G. W. White, who has been working- up religious interest among the colored people of the city for several months past, has nt last met with success, and a church is now being built. Lot 9, block 14, in Riverside addi tion, on North Commercial street, has been purchased. Considerable material is already on the ground, and work will be pushed until the structure is completed. m Secretary Gregg Bereaved. Smith manager of the Union Title abstract Co,, will today aud tomorrow conclude his canvass for orders for the mammoth litho graph mnp of Salem and surbur ban additions. At noon today he had 8,400 subscribed for aud it will be necessary to get 1,600 more taken before the contract can be let. Mr. Eagleston, toporagrapuer has been at work two months pre paring the map from the origioual records based on a plat of the laud entries as they are preserved la the records of the surveyor-general's offlc-j. This map is 7J by 8 feet in size and shows 90 subdivisions and plats added to the nrigional city, and all streets, parks, squares, lots blocks, alleys, etc. Circles will be drawn from the state house for each one half mile radius, showing the relative distances of all suburbs from that center. These circles will be a revelation to many who think they know just how the city lies. The lithographed copies will be supplied at 6 cts. each and no doubt enough more can be taken to ensuro the publication. THE VIADUCT. Plans Completed and Specifications Nearly Ready for Biddors. The Daily Journal for one day had nothing in about the via duct, but it was simply because the gentlemen who are authorized by the council to go ahead with this important public improvement at tend church and did not work on Sundays. THE PLANS. Now we have progress to report. The plans are so far materialized that there will be two thirty-foot arches instead of one eighty-foot arch. the cost. Preliminary estimates have been made and show that a stone arob viaduct of ruble work masoury can be built for $13,000. A viaduct of cut stone arches can be built for $14,000. This work can be done of the gray Polk county basalt STEEL WORK. Figures on steel work have not been received, but it is known that a steel superstructure for a fujl street wide viaduct will cost as much as the whole stone viaduct. Talsiaoe Sermons.
