The banyan tree with mauy trunks does direct violence to i ur Idea of a tree. Hence wo regard It as a monstrosity ora brush heap. Our uilmW w liter upon units of thought. Nature Is a multiplicity of expressions lu units. Intelligent mankind tends to unity. No educated civilized race was ever capable of a poly thclstio belief. We all grow iu the direction of our lu dividuultlty. That is the oue most graphic outward pleturo of our real self preseuted to tho world. We may seek to sink It lu tho common place of custom. We may try to be or do as the Romans much as we like, the oue predominating feature of ourselves that will leave Its im pression ou others will be our hull vlduality. We cannot suppress It. It Is the unit of our character to which our whole nature will tend aud iu which it will seek constantly to express Itself. Individuality is the background upon which the most graphic imago of our being pictures itself, iu view of this one decisive fact of our existence, how weak are our ullecttttions, how futile to be any thing but ourselves. Nothing is so oheap aud tawdry as borrowing atlectntious that do not belong to us. Yet some lives aro so overwhelmed with the borrowed plumage of atlectation that they resemble a crudely constructed artificial os trich, the maker of which sought to supply all his ignorance of the real bird by heaping on a moutalu of miscellaneous feathers. Tho couu try girl who buys cheap and showy frippery to make herself ap pear like a city lady only makes her self ridiculous. Thero is nothing sweeter or moro wholesome than n plainly dressed, healthy looking country lass, her cheeks ruddy with the glow of health that comes from manual labor, life lamely iu the ipon air and no trivialities or dissi pations. Such a youug woman Is certnluly lu greater danger of catch ing u sensiblo city husband than tho' she went to town laced up like n wasp, aud dressed In a flashy imita tion of her city cousins. Iu tho hit ler guise every sensible city youth will pass her by as ill-bred. The foolish young man may be caught by her affectations, but she will not catch aiiy other. Suppres sion of individuality at tlie back of aflectntiou will prove a costly In dulgence. The young man from the country who npes tho city boys will never win by It. He may smoke cigarettes, spending his money at the bars,or buok the tiger, ho will lu the country boy still, He has noth ing to g'iiu and all to lose by his ex change of individuality for atlecta tion. Thero is uo moro honorable badge of citizenship today than a certificate of good character from tho farm. The whole nation is bowing to the farmer. The world is taking ofntshatto agriculture as an art. Tho writers aud thinkers iu all fields of science aud political economy uro giving their best en ergies to benefit and ennoble the avocation (f fanning. Then be a solid, sturdy citizen from the farm. Do not be a boor. Do not bo low In your tastes. Thero Is nothing In consistent with being a perfect gentleman and u good farmer. Laud is increasing iu value. Broad acres will confer a nobility lu time that the dweller in cities und towns can tiever imitate. In casting aside tho individualities of thought, tho Inde pendence of life, generated by fann ing, you are contracting your broad acre manhood to the narrow limita tions of town lot speculations. Tho youug man from the farm, nmbittous to play the part of a cheap town boy is belittling himself. In sinking Ills better manhood to follow fast town lifo he sells himself for u mess of bitter thistles. HOTEL AUHIVALS.
