IOO Ohemeketa Street, HOW IS TIJ1ST They are even talking of adopting the Oregon assessment and taxation law in Washington. In great alarm an editor Informs his readers that the assessment rolls of several coun ties hi thestatoof Vnshington, some of which have two and three na tional hanks and numerous rich men, fail to return a dollar of money, while others return the piti ful sum of a thousand dollars or so. Ye gods 1 What a state of allulrs 1 1 The intelligent editor preccedeth: This Is how it is in Washington. IMiey will not allow a mau to have his debts deducted from his assess ment und thus the creditor escapes .detecllou, aud can conceal his credits With impuuity. In this regard the Oregon law is fairer ami better in every way. The taxpayer is allowed to deduct his bona tide debts within tho state by submitting to the asses sor the names of tuo creditors. through this means tens of thous ands of dollars, under the head of monoy, notes and accounts," are yearly added to tho assessment roll that would undoubtedly be concealed. but for tho fear of detection. No such fear exists in Washington and the adoption of tho Oregon system, bud as it is In many other respects, would, to a large extent, remedy the evil complained of. It seems Oregon has a better sys tem of assessment, than, than that heaven of tax-dodgers collect in Washington. forgotten. He Is on record as n true friend of the people in this matter. It Is surprising that the present city government of Portlnnd is standing in with the interested parties, A correspondent hn9 well said that the Muessdortrer free-bridge commis sion Is manfully battling to save tho power conferred on tho city through them, and if tho supremo court is induced to dcolare tho net invalid, the city will have tho satisfaction of knowing, aloug with the bridge and ferry interest, that It Is assisted in tho great nttd glorious work of knocking out the free-bridge bill. The action of tho Portland cham ber of commerce in favoring tho Washington sldo for tho portage road, wo firmly believe,, inimical to tho best interests of Portland and tho stato of Oregon. For many years the metropolis of Oregon has pursued a policy which has beon actuated by the most-sel fish interests, and opposed tho development of other portlouB of tho state, The Dalles Times-Mouutalueer. There are so many arguments in favor of having all the street car lines in a city under one manage ment that It seems needless to dlc euas or illustrate them.
