She mingles more ' or less with civilization, but yot is her own mistress. This Is tho bear that created much havoc in Somerset, Mer cer, Hunterdon and Burlington coun ties, nnd seems to bo bullet proof and trap wise. Sho is now giving tho farm ere of tho upper part of Mercer count a lively ciintoncc Slio is tho saino bear that escaped two summers ago from tho Trenton city park nndor sensational circum stances. Sho was then a cub, pur chased for tilt park In tho Pocono mountains by Councilman Edmund 0. Hill, who started tho littlo zoological garden which delights tho children of Trenton. When tho bear arrived at the Clinton street station by express tho box was roughly tumbled from tho car and full apart. Tho cub showed her teeth, and at oneo got v'io right of way. Sho dashed across tho lawn, and finding an opening in tho fenco, entered tho yard of tho hotel near tho depot. Sho proceeded through tho kitchen and wandered ino tho barroom, which was at the time filled. Tho presenco of tho cub cleaned out tho barroom. , Tho cub followed to tho street, but met with a reception of flying brick, and then sho took rofugo in the Mercer cemetery opposito the station, where she held tho fort against several hun dred excited men and boys, and was finally lassoed by a colored man. The bear pit at tho park was not yet ready for tho cub's reception, so sho was locked up in tho barn, and tho news papers, out of admiration for tho preco ciousness of tho cub, called it Kitty Hill, after Councilman Hill, of tho park committee. Two days of confinement wore Kitty's temper, and ono day Kitty unlatched the barn door and walked out. She reached tho canal that winds its way in front of tho park and jumped in. The park guards gavo a lively chaso, and Kitty saved her bacon by swim ming from ono sjdo of tho canal to tho other until sho distanced them; then sho took to tho woods. Since then she has been a veritable tourist, and has managed to keep out of tho range of bullets and clubs and lived on tho fat of tho land. Sho has disturbed tho suburban quietness of many places, but defied all tho ingenious plans of men to cap turo her. Her appearance in Mercer county, only a few miles from tho park, Is a matter of surpriso. Thoso who have seen her say that sho is largo and fat. Sho is now in' tho great Bear swamp, five miles above Trenton, whero sho is safe unless hunger causes her to wander. Philadelphia Press. A Drnmutlo Incident. Tho slave dealers extend their activi ty oven to tho very doors of Biskra, tho headquarters of tho order of tho War rior Monks of tho Sahara, and ono ol the most dramatic features of the cere mony of tho consecration of the monks was when Cardinal Lavigerio led to the altar a littlo brown girl, barely nine years old, who had succeeded in conceal ing herself and in effecting her escapo from a slave caravan passing through tho desert a few miles to tho south of Biskra. A sudden movement of tho child caused her to drop sometliing that sho was holding concealed beneath tho folds of her djebba. Tho venerable prelate bent down and raised it from tho ground. It was a small, dusky hand the hand of tho littlo girl who stood beside him, and which in sheer wanton cruelty had been cut oil by her captors. Hold ing it aloft, and pointing it southward toward tho great Sahara, while with his own hand ho raised tho child's arm, so that all present could seo tho man gled stump, tho cardinal exclaimed, in tones which seemed to ring forth as a clarions "I would to God that all Eu rope could seo this little hand I May it 6ervo to direct your lino of march.
