The people of Salem can uot af ford to let tho proposition to enlarge tho endowment of tho Willamette University to fail. It is a matter that concerns all who are Interested in the prosperity of tbo city. Con sidered from a business stand point it adds largely to the growth and prosperity of the city aud whatever enlarges Its usefulness also aids the pros perity of the city. It is all the more important since the proposition Is not an appeal to tho generosity of the people it is not a demand for subsidies but a business preposition Involving no possible loss but on the contrary insuring fair returns, In fact a good investment considered simply as a speculative venture. With such an opportunity there should Im uo hesitancy In taking hold of tho undertaking and push it to success. There is no question of doubt connectid witli it, If thobe who are able will only Interest them selves to the extent of Investigating the proposition and then uetliig promptly and unitedly. It only re quires a little coucert of action aud popular enthusiasm to make It an emmiueut success, fluauclally to all parties, as well as an honor to the city. The business men of Salem ousrht to show their interest in the upbuilding of the city by giving this matter the needed support not as donors, bnt as a business enter prise. It Is no longer a question of where to locate but a question of disposition to do anything. There certainly is not a business man in Salem who does not desire to seo the University put upon a more solid basis aud there can be uouo who are uot willing to do their best in helping along so worthy an enterprise, especially when It in volves no sacrifice of means. If all do a little It will insure success; It only lequires united ef fort and this should not be lacking, Wanted.
