ITS FINANCIAL CONDITION. Tho lord is Thoinns Olillculty Warmly Discussed and, a Probable Settlement Adopted. The Salem Roard of Trade met in their room iu the Exchange block last night with u small attendance. The minutes of the last meeting were read aud some other routine work was disposed of, when the communications before the board were read. A communication from the Oregon City water way conven tion, asked the board to pay tho sum of $15 as their part of the as sessment to that convention. Tho secretary was instructed to inquire of the secretary of that convention what that $15 was for, as no pur pose was stated to which the money could be devoted. A propositiou was read from O. R. Whitmore, of McMinnville, by which he agreed to give illustrated lectures in the East aud South for the purpose of adver tising Oreiton. No action was takeu iu the matter, as tho board was not in possession of funds for that pur pose. A proposition was also read from the Cold Storage company which was not acted upon. The re port of Treasurer A. N. Rush for the year ending Feb. 1, 18'.)1, showed that $2013.11 had been received aud &19S8.03 had beeu paid out, leaving S53.0S on hand. The secretary read his report, which was mislaid at the annual meeting, which was longer thau it was intelligible. Consider able discussion took place iu regard to the finaucial condition of the board. It seems that the eyes of the members are just being opened as to the indebtedness of the board. The members thought they were living within the bounds of the revenues of the board. The gross indebted ness of the board is at the present time I11SS.25 and lias $230 on hand The delinquent list shnv.s S244.9J due the board and probably can all be collected. This leaves a net in debtedness of $693.31. .The monthly Muiiicnpuous u me uoaru are ?:.':-, and tho monthly dues Sl!),inaking u monthly income of $244. Some time ago some of the red estate men stopped their subscription on account of a man not being kept in Portland to turn immigration this way. The keeping a uiau there was a part of the stipulation by which they agreed to pay to the board a certain sum monthly. If this stoppage had not beeu made, and it should uot, the delin quent list would show S520 more. It may be said if this sum is paid it will beoulyby the liberality of these men, not that they are under any obligation to do so. Some of them are in favor of paying in order to lift the debt of the board. The Lord & Thomas n, flair was the most important suject before the board. And oue that startled tho members and it appeared for a while as if the board was destined to bo visited by a storm. The board was , under the impression that they owed I that firm a littie less than $100, un- til a few davs asxo. when the agent ' with whom they made the contract j arrived in Salem and ciaimed that I bill amounted to S00. then began to waut The peo to know what was wrong that they had been mis led as to that contract. The matter i9 not yet thoroughly under stood. The facts are Lord & Thom as made a coutract they never in tended to live up to. The agent at offered to deduct 10 per out of the advertisements which were out of position, which would leave au indebtedness of $743.90. The board j owes them more than $160 according , to correct insertions, though the j papers containing the adviitise- meuts have not been received by j i, I 1 - :.i.l I.. 11. r. n... uoaru as opeumeu in movun-, tract. The agent of Lord &. Thomas, Mr. Wilson, was present at the board meetintr last niuht and by his ofilcious manners assumed that r the Salem people did not know how to conduct r.n ordinary business lueetlucr or enterprise. Thus from the first ho Incurred the disfavor of the members which, though to be recretted, destroy ed tho harmony or. m,h mr.Htli.L- the mcullll!,. 1 comilllliee wua Jii(i"iuicu wi sUtiug of U. J. The management is to be cougratu lated for securing this novel attrac tion, aud our theater goers will, doubtless, testify their appreciation of the same by a full house. "Ole Oleaou" is an absolute uovelty.uoth lugllkeit hM ever been produced before. It was put on originally without any of tho llourish of trum pets and beating of tom-toms which has been the preliminary of all the other successful farce comedies. It was pioduccd, and won purely on its merits. The idea of substituting u Swedish dialect for the German or Irish, of which tin public has long beeu surfeited, is not a new one. It has occupied too many managers who lacked the stamina to back their judgment in departing from tho beaten path, and who are metaphor ically kicking themselves. Tho Swedish character has something iu it wonderfully interesting to the Americau people, aud piesents quite as many possibilities, if not more, than the conventional German, Irish or Yankee. The play has another claim to novelty, iu that there is a well-defiued pbt ruuuiug through it which at times developes strong dramatic situations, thus bring the grotesque iuto greater prominence. TUB JUKUAN HOYS. The Circuit Court Still in Session N. S.Tmlil Acipjitteil Tlu Anmstillo I'usu A'aiii. The case of the state of Oregon iMalust N. S. Toad, ot Woodburu, whereby he was accused of forging the will of IS. L. Quimby, hich has beeu in t lie court for a day or two, was decided this morning by the jury returning a verdict of uot guilty. Some of the best citizens of Woodburu could not be persuaded that he was a man who would do such a thing frm the start. The state vs. the Jordan boys and Suiede was the? next ease tried. The following jury were summened: M. A. McCorele, Allan Drips, Julius Ruef, S. II. Linton, D. L. Greeu, L. S. Winters, A. M. Steen, L. Watt, J. Cordingly, V. M. Eugle, T. Moult, J. It. White. After the case was submitted to the jury they were not long in returning a verdict of guiliy. Sutede was sentenced to two years in the peniteutiary. The attorneys for the Jurdiu ujvi entered a motion I for a new healing un some technical- i lty as to who owned the slaughter I houe. They weie uot accused of I stealing the slaughter house and has ,' no bearing in the case, and the I judge will not. in all probability, 'grant the motion. A possible sen ' tence stares the notorious boys .'strongly in the face. They are uc I cused and convicted of being the i prime movers in the scheme. Their associate, who was convieteii, goi two years, and their accomplices who plead guilty six mouths each; so their sentence will not be less than two years. Their well known characters will uot allow ther.i any leniency. The state vs A. T. Zumwalt was being heard again this afternoon on motion for a new trial. It was thought these Aumsville cases were all settled, at least these men had spent all the money intelligent men i would iu such cases. ! niedi- A man who has practiced ci ne for 40 veais ought to know salt from sugar; read what he says: Toledo, O., Jau. 10, 1S87. During the last six months Eastern advertising has not had that efi'ect It fonuerl.s had, tho' the board has had the benefit of a clerical service costing over $1000 a year. This point was very pointedly brought out by the business ques tions asked by Mr. Cottle at the nieellue last night. lie called out the facts fioni the secretary that out of over $2200 paid Into the advertis ing fund only $100 had been paid for Eastern advertising. Ho also re marked that Eastern people cared very little for a showy office and salaried officials. What they re quire is to be systematically supplied with the facts in favor of coming here to locate. It seems that Salem's ammunition lias been wasted and like tho old rev olutionary firelock kicks hardest at the lear end. The money that is collected for advertising Salem should not lie wasted but every dol lar put to good use In circulating good printed matter right where it will do the most good.
