Till is :t worthy undertaking and all should assist in the effort to improve thcup'pearance of the resting place for our dead. Our cemeteries are not kept lu the neat ondltion that they should be. Wee Is nre allowed to grow up and almost hide the graves In many parts of the cemetery. Much of the work that is dorle there now is due to tbe G. A. R. eople. Of ail pub. lie grouud-i, it heenis that a grave yard Bhould receive the most eare aud be kept in the neatest condition. Joint mieusc This evening the Alkj-HeHieriau aud Ahenuum societies hold their first Joint meet in in ihoir hall in the Insurance building. A giwd program has been arranged for the occasion. After the program in over it social dance will be the order for an hour or so. Tli- PblliidoriaiiH and Pliliodosians of the University also hold their re ularjiiut meeting in their hall in the University huildlux this eve nt . The friends of these sock tie", nre welcome to attend the exere.tm. Tbo Oect that Is registered to car ry tbe Oregon exports to foreign markets is a large one, it ml has some of the largest vessel that have ever filtered the Columbiit river. The B Itish ship, Scottish Glens Is the largest one eu route for the Oregon IHirt, mill i he American ship, Tlllle E. Slarluick Is the third ami bos a registered capacity of 1031 tons. The British ship bus a tonnage of L1W1 tons register. yhlis nfieu car ry a good many more tuui than their registered capacity calls for. A few years ago a ship of 1700 to 1800 tou burden, considered It dan gerous to eudeavor to outer the Co himbla river. The jetty has evidently made a ijreat improvement mi the l-ar thai lias lieeu such a drawback t com ineree in the Oregon ports. When a lew years ago twunty-tnrve oi tweiity-lntir feet was the register fm I he depth of low tide, now it Is re liorted to have tueuty-elgbt feet This is given for tbe iboalest plaii on the bar. The jetty Is not y-l near its completion, though tl.i work bus beeu pnigressiug for about four years. The appropriation foi that work has not been as liberal a tbe lmHirtunce of tbe plai-e nor tbi wish of the people demanded. Many of the vessels wbich conn into tbe Columbia river will rreeivi uargoes at Astoria, while others wll. take all or a part of the load ' Portland. Much of the wheat thai is shipped from Astoria is takei. there from the Willamette vallvy. This goes to Portland by rail anil from there is conveyed down tin river on steam crafiB or barges. It tbe valley hud direct communica tiou to the sea by rail all this add! tional expen-e of river transport lion would lie saved to the farmers Salem is the center of the valle.i aud is in the very midst of what will always be a great grain region, notwithstanding that a great deal ol laud .here will le set nut lu fruit More laud is brought into cultiva tion every year, so the grain pro duced will not decrease to any per eeptible degree. A railroad to As toria is what Salem now wants, Atnria has begun the work and now has a standard gauged road in operation fur fifteen miles, nnd is still working to extei'.d the road. Astoria is to lie lienefltted but lit tie more than Salem on the com pletion of such a mad. Nothing should be left undone to mane this a railroad center. Albany nor any other of the vdley towns have the natural advantage that Salem has. Some city must have these roads, for they will lie built in a few years, and the town tuat laKes llie proper step now will stand tbe I test uhaiice to reap the rich harvest. Salem, instead of being 1G0 miles from the sea by way of communication, should make the distance less than half that, aud then bigger fleets than are now boasted of will visit tbe ports. Puobate Couht In the matter of F. Garden, deceased, Sophia Gar den and M. F. Davidson adminis trators, furnish the court their final account, time for hearing tbe same is set for Dec. 1G 1S90 at 10 o'clock a m. In the mutter of the estate of Joseph Raines, deceased, the final ac count Is heard and the administrator are ordered to disburse the balance of the prop rty on hand among the heirs of tbe deceased. The reportA were allowed aud the dmiuistratoreexouerated. A liquor license was granted to A. W. Jette, of ijhanipoeg precinct, for a period of six mouths, giving him permis sion to Bell spirituous, malt aud vinous liquors lu quantities less than one gallon. We notice a fine collection of oil palntlni on exhi bition lu the Bank block S03 Com mercial strcat, which were exhibited itt the Spokane Exposition. They are the work of E. Tojetttaud A. W. Beet of Hau Francisco, andaatd by all our local artists and picture cm- noisseuni who have visited them, to be the finest colUctlou ever on ex hibition in Salem. Mr. T.-Jettl U admitted by all to be tbe finest figure (winter on the coast anil has very few superiors In America. Some of his paintings bringing as high at 1U,000 iu San Francisco, and be is uoted for bis lifelike flesh tones and for the briliuncy and harmony of hi displays, Mr. Best Is one of our ri lug youug artists who have gaiued more than a local reputation and he has i.ere some of his best efforts aud sonic of the most noted and pictur esquo views in Oregon nnd Cali fornia. The object of the exhibit is to show Mr. Beat's work, as he is or ganizing a class iu landscape paint ing. All who wish to join his class should call this week as the class will start on the beginning of next week. At tii k Indian School. A re porter took a run down to the Chemawa Indian school uearHalem, this morning but could get hold at no n-ws as to proponed change. upt. Irwlu has moved his family to Salem but was reticent as usual iu newspaper men. If the Rev. would hob-nob and be sociable with "the hoys," and the local politicians, le would not find his road so rocky o travel. But it cannot be aaid i hat he does not attend to his busi ness. Among the aspirants for up iHiluttnent In case of a change the following are being pushed by their friends: Prof. Rlgler, of Oregon City; Prof. Leech, of California, formerly priiici, at of the Klamath igency school; General Odell, of alem; T. C. Shaw, of Salem; J. W. Crawford, of S-il-'tn. Prof. Rigler has the endorsement ofStete Supt. McElroy, aud must of the state house aud county republican oQl eials. That Fkiksdli-ssBkiduk. The destruction of the central pier of tbi proposed bridge over the Willamette river at this city Is about completed aud tbe destroyers have begun drill lug and blasting on the west pier, and its fate Is conceded to be simllai 1 1 that of Its associate. Work wok bt-guu this morning to drill holes far thf so-called cylinder piers that are to be set up ou tbe old remnant of ruin that now stands Mtxie fifteen or more feet above the water. From what one cannot help but learn on the streets It seems this bridge has but few friends, aud how It can stand and face a fair city and be the ridicule ot her people is bard to understand. It will surely en deavor to drown itself in the first high walet to get rid of the derision I hat is hurled nt it. N IMroRTAST ESTABLISHMENT. Birua Brti.' Brickyard-Tie mi's Werk-Tila Clay Dbeereret. 8ta- As the building season is nearly over, many will be Interested to know what one of tho leading source! of supplies has contributed to the year's Improvement hi Salem. Messrs. Burton Bros., proprietors of tbe old Collins brickyard, and man agers of tbe prison yard east of town, have this year done u heavy bust neas In their line. On the whole they have made 1,800,000 brick nt their yards, ami 1,1,")),000 at the state yards. The latter uro being used in tbe building of the new reform school, while over n million were used on new buildings lu Salem. The firm still have over 700,001) on hand, which they hope will supply their trade until early spring when they will begin mak ing by the Palette system before the weather will permit the u.-v of the yards without cover. Tin work done by the firm Is all first class. They use two of the improved Quaker brick machines, each ol which will turn nut from 120,000 to .25,000 per day, while the water, which is an important factor iu a brick yard, is supplied by a wheel from Mill creek, thus saving uu im tense amouut of lalsir. The boi have Just dlicovered a large vein ol I be choicest clay for tile right on heir own ground adjoining tlu yard, and with the present big de mand for that article in view, tliev seriously con tern piste putting in tilt machinery lu the spring. Tin would require it largely Increased force of men, nnd should be eucour iged. This firm has employed on n average twenty men all summer, whieli is no small Item in the wage roll of our city. They are men who understand their business, aud an rapidly building up in it. Tlie. look for a heavy demand for brick next year, and propose to be pre pared to meet It with the best article In tbe market aud at prices to mm pete with the world. A Britisher Suited at I.al. A Britisher is as hard to suit in any one living. A very much dN justed sou of proud Albion's Isl this afternoon wandered discouso lately up and down the streets ol Salem. The trains all seem to lie running the wong way for him and, tempted by the lovely sun.un-1 days, for once h had taken a run up from Portland without his um brella and, the showers were drir ing the Britisher from one tiwuine to another. A smile broke over hlf- rosy face as he sighted the Mackin toshes hung up iu front of Johnson Boothby & Co's, and he at once pro cured one of those fashionable moisture-shedders.
