Musical and Social Functions Past nnd Coming for tin People's Pleasure. AFTERNOON RECKITION. On Friday Mrs. Win. England received about one hundred nnd fifty lndy friends at Her home on Liberty street. Mrs. Geo. H. Burnett nnd Mrs. E. M. Lnfom assisted In tho functions, together with Mr. Moores, of California. The enter tainment was enriched by rendi tions from Wolfl's parlor orchestra, elnslug by Mis Willis nnd rending by Miss Long. The house and grounds were decorated, the stairway beautifully trimmed with Ivy, the dining room draped in blue and yellow, with plenty of cut (lowers. The outdoor arrangements for cozy resting places and chats were complete. It wax n few min utes to six when the last of the company separated. The luncheon consisted of salads nnd sandwiches, with delicious addition und etceteras. A feature of the service was the hand-painted china which was the work of the fair hostess, who is fair in every department of social cul ture. The event was one that caused nil to express n high degree of culture. HES1C1NED. Miss Jenue M. Long has sent in a resignation as teacher of elo cution iu Willamette universi ty. She was asked to withdraw the resignation but did not do so. Miss Long has an engagement otter ed at Portland, nnd will probably divide her time between the metrop olis nnd the capital. Those who witnessed the acting of the beautiful coquette Miss Willis the powerful bursts of eloquence from the Injured wife Miss Long and the several other notable scenes of tin- play, will want to see them again, while tlnwe u ho have not had that pleasure cannot allord to miss this opportunity. Tho predic tion is that standing room will be at a prviuhini, as Salem people appre ciate and encourage home talent, especially where It is meritorious, as in this case. Tho Salem orchestra of eleven pieces will furuish music, which of itself will be worth more than the admission fee. STATE TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION. The State Teachers' Association will meet in the legislative hall at the state house Monday, and will continue fort liree days.
