Cincinnati Times Star: Thesups rio. merits of an evening paper, when compared witli those of a morning issue, hnvo been acknowl edged. The one Is a history of to day, the other a history of yester d y, the one is current, tho other is nbiek number. The name of the triumphs of the evening paper is legion. For the issue that comes with the crowing of the cock the business man has no time save that which ho snatches as he bolts his breakfast and gulps down his coffee. He g ancesafAhe head lines, notices the latest quotation of tho product he has to sell, mid then abruptly ex changes the paper for his hat. Fora critical reading of tho news ho de pends upon tho hours following his 0 o'clock meal. Then, with slippers on and his feet mounting tho back of a chair or the mantel, ho settles himself for double duty, viz: digest ing the hearty meal of the day and digesting tho day's history. Nothing In tho evening papers es capes tho reader's eye; telegraph, local, editorial, miscellany and ad vertisement", aro all devoured. It is not a lunch of news but a verita ble banquet. The morning paper Is only nibbled at, the evening p.tper Is devoured. Tho advertiser is awaking to this expensive fact; the man who has been pilloried in tho vesper addition will swear to Hh truth and oder a multitude of ac cusing witnesses as cumulative tes timony. Tho only peoplo who aro slow to realize tho superiority of tho vesper addition of a newspaper aro thoso who aro connected with the addi tions of tho matin, but even tho morning newspaper men aro yield ing to the invltable, and, In actions which speak louder than words, aro extolling their rivals. Has not our whilom fellow-townsman, M, Hal stead, that Nestor In morning journalism, gone over, body and breeches, to tho rialm occupied by tho evening papers? Has ho not had his well-known name lowered from the morning Commercial Oazeito tlag-statt'and hoisted on the highest pinnacle of tho Brooklyn Evening nalists who arc born again when they forsake tho slow coach for the lightning express, when they decide to lead rather than follow the pro cession. Hesperus, not Eos, Is now first. The Essay that Won the Flag Prize. A kw weeks ago the Youth'u Companion offered a flag prize for the best essay on the American flag in the public school. One flag was ofTored In each state. Miss Bessie Johnson, daughter of Judge John son, of Oskaloosa, won the honor for Iowa. She Is a member of tho Oska loosa high school, and tho following Is her essay: The unquestioned influence of the public schools should be used to the advautage of the whole people. Nothing could bo wiser or more patriotic than the union of flag and school one the representative of our country's past and present and the other her very future itself. The nation's welfare is dear to every patriotic heart, and every mcaus that will inspire love and create a I laudable ambition is worthy tho profoundest attention. The first Ideas of a child are de rived from the objects about him, and upon tho same base ho builds tho noblest conceptions of his man-1 hood. The flag is not merely a piece of bunting witli thirteen stripes and many stars, but a symbol of the noblest strength and purest love, the emblem of this grand Na- tlon. Its every wave and fold speak 1 to us with more thrilling words than orator ever uttered. On the mind of a child the con stant sight of such an object would have nn immeasurable influence. The eirect would be even greater, vxteudiug to tho foreign born who have yet to learn our history, and to the reconstructed south, once dis loyal to this very flag. Tho thirteen stripes and forty-two stars would recall our country's past, and every child would be more in terested in the stories of the May flower, Plymouth Rock and Bunker Hill. The thoughts would revert to that little band of colonists fighting so bravely for sacred liberty, to Wash ington, their patriot leader and our hero, thau whom a grander never lived. Tho flag would suggest our last conflict, such a conflict as the ancient or modern world had never witnessed; when Lincoln bore our country's burthens, and Grant led tho army to victory; when the slave stepped forth a free man, and ihat T WO LOTS Church Street, two blocks from Court House $1,600 each.
