At a meeting of committees held ' yesterday afternoon further arrange ments were made for the 4th of July j celebration to be held at Salem this year. The funds are raised and the grentest event of the kind ever held in Salem is nutiplcated railroad and steamboat excursions will bo run from all directions. The brass bauds from Albany, Independence, Dallas, Silvertoti, Chemawn, Stayton and Salem are engaged. Dr. Stratton of Mills Seminary Is engaged to deliver the oration of the day. Many other matters are already attended to, nil of which will aid in making a grand success of it. The neighborhood of Cliemawa has been the scene of two destruc tive fires tills week, Monday the flue barn of J. W. Gilbert, nnd Tuesday the new cottage of Mr. Beatty were burned to the giound. Tho origin of the fire is unknown, but is thought to be the vile work of some Incendiary. There Is no punishment too severe for one who Is so low as to willfully destroy the property of an other.
