IsTiioMrso.v Heaktless. Thore Is a great deal of talk among demo crats to tbo effect that D. P. Thomp son is n heartless tuoncy-clianirci and millionaire. There Is no little net of his which Is not bruited abroad, but will bo well remembered when brouRht before our renders, nnd whioh shows that Air. Thomp son has a heart with kind feelings when necessity becomes apparent. Threo years ago iastspring, the great mlno disaster occurred at Nunnlnin, by which several workmen lost their lives. Among these were ten mem bers of the Ancient Order of United Workmen. This Jurisdiction was not then as Btrong In member or financial standing as it has since be come and It would take some time to collect the $2000 for each of tin families of the deceased. D. 1 Thompson realized these facts and that tho families had immedlntt need of the money, so the next da after the disaster he drew his cliecl for twenty thousand dollars ano handed It to tho treasurer of the or der at Tortland, to pay the lossec spoken of. Does this indicate heart lessness or n want of nynipathj with tho deserving? That net aloni will go down with Dave Thompson as a solace against all the slanden whlcli interested enemies mny In vent or circulate against him. A Oiuiat Kvbnt. In tho ex citement of the campaign wo know tho ladies will not, though somo 01 the gentlemen may, forget tho Gol' tra-Macrum musical recital. These young ladles have undertaken to furnish ourcltlzensaneiitertalnnienl 011 a more generous plan than lias ever been attempted by home talent. The number of performers ami the rich iieps of program are both worthy of comment. They huvo u largo number of pupils and tho bistof these will produce their best work and the responsibility of stieeeos in getting up so tine an oportunlty for them to appear In public, should be shared by their friends as well. An entertainment of tills kind is so much more beneficial to all con cerned than many of the traveling shows that como along, that it should merit the most generous support. Tho program is printed elsowliero. t uiMaii Pjii:asaxt8. Com plaint is made to the Journal by responsible citizens that the most dlsgiaceful orgies were carried on a few nights ago in one of the promi nent saloons of tills city, and did not ceao until after six o'clock in the morning. Tho re ported doings were such as could not bo detailed in a decent uewspnper. Two of those females to whom shame has become n stranger were principal uctors in the scene, while n crowd of men and even boys were hilarious witnesses nnd n banjo in the hands of one of theso furnished tho music for their gyrations. Their yelling was heard fully a block away during the livelong night, nud the wonder is that the patrolling officers of the city did not put a stop to it. There Is much toleration lu Oregon, but repeated violations of de cency beforo tho eyes of the rising generation are liable to wipe out that toleration.
