n TDE ('U'lTAL JOURM. HATTIE MITCHELL. One of the Most Beautiful Girls 1b Washington. Mies Mattlo Mitchell is a former Washington favorite, and her re turn, after an absence abroad of three.years, is hailed with delight by a large circle of friends. Miss Mltohell Ib tho youngest daughter of Senator John Ht Mitchell, of Ore gon, and, fihe( has:tho advantage of her father's popularity in addition to her own charming personality. She is one of tho most exquisite bits of femininity In the country, and one of the most beautiful girls that Washington society has seen. She has a perfectly moulded figure, slightly below the medium height Her face i9. pretty with a prettiness that dazzles. Her eyes are purplish and dark-lashed. Her hair is a rich bronze, that masses Itself confus ingly, and .her skin 1b something marvelous in its satin texture and wild-rose tints. Her daintiness and tho perfection of her beauty makes her more like'an exquisite piece of bisque than anything else. Miss Mitohelliis as cultivated as she is beautiful, and is accomplished In every way to the last degree. She Is a fine musician as well as a remarkable linguist, speaking sev eral languages with a native fluence, and is constantly adding a new for eign tongue to her accomplsbments. This winter Italian is taking up her attention and she devotes several hours a day to mastering that lan guage by herself. Miss Mitchell looks absurdly young to have been a belle for a season or two, threo or four years ago, but a numerous train can tes tify to her prowess at, that time, and are delighted hat the speculation concerning her permanent stay abroad is at least, temporarily settled by her determination to stay in Washington this winter. In spite of her three years of resi dence abroad and many stories to the contrary, Miss Mitchell is as thoroughly American as ever, ex cept perhaps for some delightful littlo mannerism an indefinable little.sbrug, a delicate turn of tho hand, the -merest suggestion of an accent, and the confidential little "don't you know" that punctuates her sentences. Her delight at the prospect of another season her" is unnafected, and she loves Wash ington as the only home she has much recollection of. Mrs. Mitchell, being an. Invalid, the housekeeping cares of the lovely home at 1714 Connecticut avenue, rest upon the shsulders of the daughter, whose housewifely airs and graces are as lovely as herself. The big rooms are assuming a de lightful cpzlness Under her super .vision, and the thousand and one things that go to make up the modern drawing-room are the clever result of her taste. Senator Mitchell's handsome din ners will be doubly attractive this winter owing to the presence of his daughter. Their enterfainmepts will undoubtedly be mpre quiet in character than agressively gay, owing to tho Indisposition of Mrs. Mitchell. Next to her new housekeeping cares, Miss Mitchell is most devoted to her little nephew, who is almost omnipresent in his charming auntie's boudoir, and whose con stant companion be .is in all her morning outings. Altogether Washington society is to be congratulated upon the return of Miss Mitchell and. the opening, of another hospitable home. Wash ington Post; " Edward Bellamy, the author of "Looking Backward," has just-written a fanciful sketch entitled, "With the Eyes Shut, ' In .which he de scribes an approaching phonograph loage. The uses which are found for the phonograph are novel and amusing. Passengers on the rail way trains are supplied with phono graphic, literature, so that their eyes are not injured by reading In aot-tiug-coocb. The names of the sta tions are annouueed by phonograph In clear tones, which form a strik ing contrast to the incomprehensi ble gibberish of the ordinary brake man. Mr. Bellamy describes a night's experience' In a hotel. Ho wu startled from his dreams by tho ound of a voice. He centinues: "What had startled roe wu the voice of a young woman who could not havo bean aUudlng mere than tn feet from my bed, If the tones of her voice were any guide, she was not only a young woman, but h Very charming one.
