k$b '! THE MAGIC TREE. A True Story Illustrating the Great Intel llgenco of lice. On n certain plantation, which It will bo u woll not to locate, thoro was a very largo, hollow oran jf p treo whtch.accordlng to tho 8t. Louis Pott-Dipatch, had novcr borno any fruit, although 1 blosBomod rogularly every iprlnff. After blossoming tho blossoms would all gradually disappear and a small orlflco ott tho end of tho twig would bo all that was loft for tho balance of tho year. This went on for a groat many years, until cno day tho placo was bold to a man from tho North, who dotormlncd to cut down tho treo and solvo tho mystery If possible,. Ho sccordlngly had thotrce cut down, and in (toad of' finding - solid trunk ho found nothing but a largo outsido shell of a treo, whllo tho insido was porfoctly hollow, and was occuplod by a largo family of squirrels and a colony of boos. Tho boos and squir rels wore vory light in color and did not ap pear to havo any eyes, and tho orangos woro elongated Instead of round, although very swoot tasting, and othorwiso appeared to bo oxcollont fruit Tho man was puzzled to account for tho phenomenon, as thoro was no oponlng in tho troo by which even tho bees could get insido it, but the mystery was explained by an old colored man, who hadbconontho placo many, many years. Ho told tho following story i When tho orango troo was very small It was found to bo growing hollow, and aftor it got to bo about a foot thick tho holo near tho center of tho trunk was mado larger and a limb grafted into it; tho troo then did well, apparently, but hod novor ' borno fruit It is thought that tho bees and tqulrrols had 'gotten into the troo and mado it thoir homo, and when tho'limb was graft ed In their means of ogress woro stoppod up und they made prisoners. As bees aro known to bo vory Industrious tho following will readily bo believed: Tho bees would go out to tho end of tho twigs, which woro also hollow, ovory spring and pull tho blossoms Insido, and thus got tho honoy by turning tho flowers insido out, tho oranges would then grow inside, and tho twigs being small, account for tho elongated shapo of tho fruit; tho boos would live on tho honey and the squirrels on tho fruit, and thus a col ony of each was established, and lived' in 'comfort and plenty on tho insido of tho orango treo. 1 WHY THEY RACE SLOW. A Dakota Conductor Give Borno New Pnlnta on flAllronfl VlnntiAlf n ' A man was ono day making a trip on a 11 mixed train " on' a Dakota road, says Texas BifUngi Passago on theso trains is novcr taken except for journeys of considerable length; walking is as easy and much faster for short distances. On this occasion the movemont was ovon moro deliberate than usual, and tho passenger callod tho con ductor to his seat and said: "Isn't this motion protty slow!" "Well, wo ain't flying, I'll admit" "Buro ovory thing is all rightl" . f "I think so." "Wheels aU grcasedt" "Yes, I greased them mysolf." "Tires all on!" "Yos. Wo run through tho creek back hero and soaked up tho wheels so that they would stay." , "Any epokos loosol" I "No." ' " You aro certain tho whools are all on the nJIsI" " Thoy was when I como in." "Couldn't be possible that any of them are oft and the axlo dragging, could it!" "I guess not" "Aro wo going up-hllll" , "No, this Is protty middlln' level." I "Do y0U always run at this gait!" "No, wo 'generally hump along a little futer'n this." , "May I ask what Is the trouble, thenl" "Certainly, We found o two-ycapold liter stuck in atreatlo back here, before you got on, and stepped and helped it out You know tho rule of the road aro that in luch canes the animal bolongs to tho com piny," "but 1 don't see why that should make ;eu run so tuundorlng slow," "Why, you blarae fool, we're takin'that iter along to headquarters; got It tledou behind, Bud It alu't used to leadln' and don't walk up vory well. I'm doing all I can t got tbo brakeman prodding It up with an tiro, brcll', and an ear or corn tied to tho bell, repe, It you think I'm goln' to start up and fobowllu along and yjU the horn oK as pod a steer at there !
