grfv fft JflW m? )!1: Ul J I AMATEUR FARMING. now to rroparato Ileni, Together with Soma ilablts of the lllrd. I Intend to dlscourso on tho delights of amateur fanning tho raising of cabbaged atiaBOabead-nlthough, to toll tho truth, I norcr cultivated any qulto so economical ly as that, writes Luko Sharp In tho Detroit jyte pms. His paper, excollontas it ls.ouRht to have1 an ' amntour farmifag column. I have folt that for some time, and now, as tbo horniest-handed son of tho soil on tho sheet, I turow mysoii into wo chasm liko that Roman follow, armor and all. My experiences In farming have boon somewhat different from thoso you road of In tho many oxcollontxagricultural papers we have. Tho correspondents of thoso journals "raakd nionoy on their farms. 1 never did. Thoyshow how 12.40 invested in chickens In tho spring amount to Sl, S&1.G0, hesldos having all tho eggs tho fami ly could use,. and at tho end of tho year a great many surplus fowls. I havo gono over theso statements in detail and figured them up and thoy were without flaw, but I never could mako tho problem como out right In practice Tho dog ato up s'overal, to begin with. Vhon I killed the dog somo new kind of epldomlothat was fond of chick ens camo along. Thcn'somo'woro stolon and the rest got tired of mo and wont away to a neighbor who could understand and sympathlzo with their various moods. They refused to lay in tho nlco comfortable boxes I provided, but prof orred to go out to tho back fields, accumulate a wealth of eggs and then sit pn thom. Finally tho hon would bocomo weary of tho sodontary busi ness whon she found seclusion and inactiv ity telling on her health, and would basely abandon tho, eggs, whon a littlo moro close attention to tho occupation would havo re sulted in complete and multitudinous suc cess. Thoir conduct in tho matter of laying was most ungenerous. When eggs woro twenty-five cents a dozen the hens would go on strlko, when eggs wero down to about eight oents thon thoy all became in dustrious. Fowls seem much more fond of gardening than I am. I hato to work in a garden; thoy don't Nothing delights a hon no much as to undertake tho entire sunor. vision and cultivation of a newly-planlcd garden. If I could only peg away with half the industry thoy do I wouldbb one of tho richest market gardoners in' America. Thoy are at it early and lato and thoy cultivate tho ground in a beautiful way that leaves it quite ready for planting something else. The first time I planted seeds in tho garden they never camo up. "Too deep," a neigh bor told me. But that was before I kept hens. When the hons got right down to business the seeds camo right up every time. Hens always havo a great crop. I never succeeded in raising any crop but woeds. Canada thistles aro my specialty. My neighbor says ho never knew any ono who was so 'successful in raising Canada thistles as I am. In fact, my farming has caused a great deal of comment In tho neigh borhood. I am surroundod by old-timo farm ers who never boforo saw agrlculturo carried on by sclentilio methods'. I go by the advice of tho agricultural journals and hand-books of horticulture. Thoy don't. Thoy beliove in planting certain things in certain stages of the moon. I havo ridiculed the moon theories a good doal, but as thoir crops come up'undmlno don't, oxcept what the hens resurrect of them, I am beginning to think that 'perhaps there is something in the moon besides the man. But to roturn to the hons. My bens aro particularly high-toned variety. It is al ways best to go in for tho most oxponslvo kinds (see Handbook of Fowl Culture, page 93). Thero is no money in tho common kinds; every body raises them. I got a dozen of very much warrantea oggs. "The hens that laid those eggs had taken prizes at threo State fairs and I don't know bow many smaller shows. When you got ex pensive eggs you can put a cheap hen on them and tho chickens aro warranted to bo just as good as if a ten-dollar hen did the sitting. I bought a fifty-cent hen that was In the slttlngbiulaess o tho man told mo. I never found out just what objection that cheap ben had to thoso dear eggs, but she positively rofusod to sit on them. Prob ably she thought any thing so expensive should not bo sat down on. Itriodtocoax and even to coorce hor, but sho porslsted in walking arouna on tbooo oggs and protest log at the top of hor voice, I assured hor that chickens were not accumulated in that way, but It was no use, Blio soemod to think It was an omelet we wanted, for tho broke several of the eggs, I noticed In reading the agricultural journals that many of the best farming Invontloui havo boon constructed first by enterprising amateurs, I desire hero to call tuo attention of thoso useful papers to my aottiughenattaobmeut. The eggs were in a nice uost llmt rested In wooden box, Ju the bottom of this box I bored a couple of two-lnoh augor holes, Through them I put tho two legs of tho Out teriog and Indignant ben and pulled on tliQ legs until the hm tt4 him and uug on the eggs, Thsu I tlud til" legs (ogotlier Ult dcrpouUi tlio box, It was u grwt sclioiiifl; Kva If the flew away with tlio box and all lie would still bf sltUng Gtt Hm Ptfff , Unfortunately in? wwtwer vctttiu Mine on at (hut time and I wwtt away and furM ) about that km for two tmt, ftlio luck to the dtwU llku 0aabu" u4 Ur tU)m almlUr, A furwur tliouU) pytir Uke a vacation, Alww k Just o contrary wliei) tlio utuiiM up )iwr mind to lt a wlWl m ifiuliws up bar win) m, to, Jibe W' (rly rtNwlyw to jw in slltlug iwi4wiWi Uw tlmo whim Uw Mi 1UW WW v)m wIN pf ilu) wmlm, HU I mi i the tlwu and yc wiwj wltli hf ww pCinmogtwiiMignHiuij, H l w44 Um 4U)U MHiwjf m vtrwjitH)rtfLfutHw4.
