F 73jfm.,vr THE CAPITAL EVENING JOURNAL. THE CAPITAL JOURNAL EvEDESDAY... -.MAY 15, 18S9. Tho Story of Annie Laurie. The Annous' song tint U sung by all singers of the nrt-Hcnt (i iv, mid which was audi a favorite with the boys i" blue, I am InfoniiL'd Is a mystery as to its author. I was raised on the next tarni to James Laurie, Annlu Laurie's father. I was personally acquainted with both her and her father, and also with the author of tho song Annie Laurie was born in 1827. and was about 17 years old when the Incident occurred which gave rise to the song bearing her n.mi". Mr. Liurle, Annie's father, was a fanner who liyed on'and owned a very large farm, called Trnglcton, In Dum friesshire, Scotland. He hired a great deal of hell), and am ing those he employed wa" a man by the name of Wallace to act as foreman, and ; while in his employ Wallace fell in love with Annie Laurie, which fact ! her father soon learned, and forth with discharged him. He went to his home in Maxwelton, and he was taken sick tho very night he reached there, and the next morn ing, when Annie heard of it she came to his bedside and waited on him until he died, and on his death- ! bed he composed the song entitled "Annie Laurie." Letter in Chicago Herald. Strangely Marked. An El Paso reporter was recently shown ix strange freak of nature. Mrs. T. Howard witnessed tlie bal loon ascension, and a few days later presented Mr. Ilow.ml with a nice little boy, who bears a singular birthmark; which is nothing more nor less than a peril ct representa tion of Professor LeRoy's balloon. The photograph, as it might be called, Is locate J just above the eyes on the forehea I, an 1 every outline of the balloon is boldly portrayed In purple lines in the skin of the In fant; even the patch on the air ship can be seen, being reproduced by a patch of white skin. The photo graph, as already stated, is perfect. The Hoy Was Right. At a village school, a precocious boy being asked to parse the sen tence. "Mary, milk the cow," went on accurately till he came to the last word, when he said: "Cow is a pronoun, feminine gender, third person, singular, and stands for Ma ry." "Stands for Mary?" asked the master in astonishment. "Yes, sir," responded the urchin, with a grin, "for if tlie cow didn't stand for Ma ry, how could Mary milk tlie cow?" A Hartford clergyman tells this anecdote early in life, while occupy ing another charge, he Invited a clergyman whom the unregeuerate would call conceited and dull to preach in his pulpit. During tho sermon our Hartford preacher dozed away was fhnanrvw-A with nrilVfir. ACCUStOIIV u it, rorrnrA hhriralf as the humblet of his creator's instruments, alid forgetting that he had not delivered thesermou began with "We beseech Thee to accept the weak and feeble effort that has been addressed to Thee and more trichly to endow Thy sen-ant In the graces bo so greatly lacks." The Verdict Unaimoas. W. D. Suit, Druggist, Bippus. lnd., testifies: "I can recommend Electric Bitters as tlie very best remedy. Every bottle sold has given relief in every case. One man took six bottles, and was cured of Rheumatism of 10 years' standing." Abraham Hare, druggist, Belleville, Ohio, affirms: "The best selling medicine I have evet handled in my 20 years' experi ence, Is Electric Bitters." Thousands of others have added their testimo ny, so that the verdict is uuan mous that Electric Bitters do cure all dis eases of tlie Liver, Kidneys or Blood. Only a half dollar a bottle at Daniel J. Fry's drugstore. EPOCH. Tho transition from long, lingering and painful sickness to robust health marks an epoch iu the life of the in dividual. Such a remarkable event is treasured in the memory and the agency whereby tlie good health has been attained Is greatfully blessed. Hence it Is that so much is heard In praise of Electric Bitters. So many feel they owe their restoration to health, to the use of the Great Al terative and Tonic.
