Of the purchasers 85 have bought farming lands, It has also, during this time sold Gl purchasing but 25 were residents of Marion county prior to purchasing. The .company has from 15 to 20 men constantly employed. It has representatives on Puget Sound. Ithas three men in Portland, twoot whom give ittheir entire time. Rev. F. J. Strayer, who last year introduced so many immi grants Into this State, is now in tho East lecturing and distributing advertising literature exclusively for this company. He will start to this State with' his first excursion on the 4th of April next. This company is now spending more money to advertise Salem and the surrounding locality than The Salem Board of Trade and Within the past twelve days for advertising Over Fifteen Hundred and Twenty-Five Dollars, Tho second edition of the company's pamphlet descriptive of Salem and the Willamette Valley is now in press. Tho subject of this brief sketch was born in Todd county, Ky., in tho j'ear 1824. Ho is a descendant of tho Irvlnes of South Carolina who came to this country long before the Revolutionary war. Their original homo is on the banks of tho Irvine river, Scotland, whence sonio of them Immigrated to Ireland, count ies Armagh and Fermanagh, and Irvinestown is tho home of the race there a stem, hardy, earnest, Scotch-Irish Presbyterian ancestry. General William Irvine, surgeon general of the revolutionary army and later commander of Crawford's expedition, was tho head of that family in this country, whose mem bers began to scatter from Pennsyl vania through tho South and West as early as 17G0. Senator Robert A. Irviuo moved to Missouri as early as 1834 with his parents, whero lie re sided until 1852, when he came to Linn county, Oregon, whero ho has ever since resided. He is a farmer, although elected sheriff for his county and served two terms. In 1800 he was elected Senator for his county for tho first time. Senator Irvine is a Arm democrat and is decidedly in favor of low taxes and thesmallsst practicable appropria tions, as his consistent votes show. He is earnestly in favor of a home stead law, believing that law taxes and good laws will do far moro to invite the industrious, laboring and intelligent classes to our state than all tho publishing and advertising. He is a strong fiiond to his own class, tho fanning and laboring people. HON. JOIIK IIAHN is a republican Representative from Clatsop county. Mr. Hahn, Is a native of that well known land that is called Germany. He was born in that country April 21, 1810. When ho was twelve years of ago he came across tho eceun and landed in New York in 1800, and in 1872 wo And him in Oregon, whero ho has resided continuously up to tho present time. Horesidos at Astoria, where lie is engaged in mercnantilo pursuits. Mr. Hahn is a man well respected by his fellow citizens and was a member of the city council from 1878 to 1881, and had tho honor ot being elected mayor of his city in 1881, which ofllco ho tilled until 1880. Mr. Hahn opposed tho pliot a';o bill that passed tho legislature this session. Ho thinks their com pensation small enough for the hardships which they are compelled to encounter. HON. JAMES A. HUNTER. Mr. Hunter is a staunch republi can from Wallowa county and resides in that beautiiul city of En terprise. Ho was born in the state of Ohio in 1832, and moved into Indiana, tho Hoosier state, in 1844. Fourteen years later we Hud him in the Grasshopper state, or what Is better kuown as Kansas. Ho served three years in tho Seventh Kansas Vol, Cavalry, and one year lu Han cock's veteran corps. In tho year 1877 he migrated to Oregon and located in Marion county of which Wallowa was then a portion. Mr. Hunter boasts of tho honor of hav ing voted for every republican can didate for tho presidency of the United States from Fremont to Harrison. The Press contains tho following description of tho recent carthquako In Central America, dated San Jose (Costa Rica, January 10th ; Tho capital of tho republic thas bean completely destroyed by a aeries of earthquakes beginning on tho evening of Dec. 20, aud the latest of which passed over us yesterday, Further shocks are expected every moment and the horrors of tho hour are Increased oy tho probability of an eruption of the volcanoes of Razu 'and Boiiz show ering down fire, bowlders and mol ten lava on a valley in which a population of 8000 is centered. Both of theso volcanoes havo shown signs of growing activity in the wreaths of blue smoke ascending from their enders. As nearly as can bo ascertained, about 200 lives havo been lost thus far, and tho in jured number nearly 1000. The homeless multitude of terror-stricken survivors wander about in a state of demoralized consternation easier imagined than described. An Infernal Machine. Helena, Moil, Feb. 10. Tho in fernal machine which was reported to have been found In the rear of tho Salvatlou Army hall at Deer Dodge turns out to bo u big red fire cracker and a small Chinese bomb. It is tho general opinion that Borne men and boys of tho army placed tho boom and cracker near tho win dow, and exploded tho other bomb near tho house, whero a child of ono of tho women of thoartny was sleep ing, in order to create sympathy. A Fitful lflro. Kanbas City, Feb. 20. Landls' transfer stables,;on Tenth street nnd Troost avenue, were destroyed by fire yesterday. James Hoffman, ono of tho owners of tho building, per ished In tho flames. Ninety-four horses wero also lost. Loss, $05,000; partially insured. ( Another lilt; l'lrc. Selma, Cal., Feb. 20. An incen diary fire destroyed ilvo buildings at tho corner of West Front and Sec ond streets. Tho losses will aggre gate ?15,500; Insuaanco $0,000.
