A2 • Friday, September 18, 2020 | Seaside Signal | SeasideSignal.com Seaside man sentenced to prison for domestic violence By NICOLE BALES The Astorian A Seaside man was sen- tenced last week to more than eight years in prison for charges related to domestic violence. Aaron Joseph French, 38, pleaded guilty to rape in the first degree, coer- cion and unlawful use of a weapon. Seaside police were called to an apartment complex in Septem- ber 2019 to a woman in distress. French allegedly threat- ened the woman with a knife and raped her after she brought his 3-year-old son for a visit. When police arrived, the woman was outside of the apartment, but the boy was still inside. French released the boy to police, but allegedly told police he had a gun and threatened violence and self-harm. Scott McCracken, a deputy district attorney who pros- ecuted the case, said police made the determination to leave and return later for French. When they returned, McCracken said the apartment was empty and police learned that a co-worker took French to a hospital after he harmed himself. McCracken called it an extremely scary incident. “And it could have gone so much worse in many different ways, but fortu- nately at this point every- one is alive,” he said. Kirk Wintermute, an attorney representing French, said French was in a very dark place when the incident occurred. He said French has a history of sig- nificant trauma and dealt with that trauma largely through drugs and primar- ily alcohol. He said the incident was set off by a text message he saw. “He frankly snapped,” Wintermute said. “He lost all control. I will say that everyone we talked to about Mr. French indicate this is not who he is. He is a person who was fun to PUBLIC SAFETY LOG report of a person who refuses to leave a local establishment. Sadler announce his sudden and unexpected death on Sept. 4, 2020, in Ham- mond, Oregon, at the age of 19. Samuel will be lovingly remembered by his family, including his mother, Jen- nifer Sadler; father, Sam Sadler; sister, Amanda Sadler; maternal grand- mother, Lois Nava, and maternal grandfather, Andy Nava. Samuel was preceded in death by his paternal grand- mother, Barbara Sadler; paternal grandfather, Jack Sadler; and his uncle, Jim Sadler. Samuel was born Sept. 22, 2000, to Jennifer and Sam Sadler in Salem, Ore- gon. He moved with his family to the North Coast of Oregon in 2005, settling in Hammond, Oregon. If ever there was an example of pure inno- cence, unfet- tered with the weight of the world, Samuel was the embod- iment of this. He lived his short life joyously. Though never capable of verbally speaking, Samuel commu- nicated through the language of kindness and love to all whom he encountered. No one ever needed a translator to “hear” what Samuel was “saying” to them with a hug and a smile. The family wishes to send a special thanks to his extended “family” at the Warrenton Grade School and the life skills class at Astoria High School, who cared and loved him as their own. In lieu of fl owers, memo- rial donations may be made in Samuel J. Sadler’s honor to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL., 33607 or donate.lovetotherescue.org CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT CLASS 9:32 p.m., Fourth Avenue and Ocean Shore: Fire investiga- tion. 10:32 p.m., Beach, north of Shilo: Numerous groups are advised of the fi re ban.
