A. is operating hostels, where they can get beds and meals at a minimum cost. In, London ihe American Y. M. C. A. nas erected 'a large building for our soldier and a clubhouse for American officers. There are Y. M. C. A. dugouts right behind the front Una trenches, where tho soldiers can get hot drinks, crack ers and other comforts at all hours. Over 2,000 men who had been reject ed on account of physical disability have been able to get into the British army by reason of the physical woik of the British Y. If. C. A. A fleet of motor cart leaves the big Y. M. C. A. headquarters la London at midnight every night to pick np sol diers who are wandering about the streets without any wholesome lodging In which to spend the night These cars are operated by Englishwomen of position and refinement, who report that they never meet any dUconrtesy at the hands of tha soldiers. The Im portance of this service can be esti mated by the fact that at least 60,000 soldiers are on leave tn London every week. Over half of these sleep la Y. M. C. A. beds every night Entertainment en Vast Scale. The Y. M. C. A. haa erected a big auditorium, seating 3,000, in each of the big draft camra, and huge chantan qua tents, seating 2 600 In the otner encampments. The association 1 run ning a 22 week entertainment circuit among the camps and la paying It companies of entertainers, who are traveling to 30 camps performing be fore the men. In many of toe camps the asso ciation haa a singing director, who Is teaching the men to sing the popular and martial airs that do so much to keep oj their spirits. Of 64 Y. M. C. A. men at Camp Dlz only three are being paid toll sal aries. In all the camps the majority of the Y.'M. C. Harry Lander, the famous Scotch singer ma come dian, now on hta farewell concert tour tn the United States, Is giving all his spare time to the service of the asso ciation and Is tinging to the soldiers at all the camps he can reach. One of the greatest services render ed by the association Is the making MEDTOBO FIREMEX RESIaVT KUAPPLa MEDFORD, Nov. 12, An attempt by drafted men enroute to Camp Lewis to kidnap "Girlie," the pet bull- dog of the Medford Ore department, waa frustrated recently only after Fire Chief Lawton and Fireman Tay lor Burk rode on the train as far as Grants Pass to rescue their pet. The bulldog was thrown aboard the troop train by playful soldiers when they stopped briefly at Medford. When the Are department represen tatives boarded the train Just as It was pulling out,' the soldiers began passing "Girlie" from car to car to wards the front of the train. Tbe beys In every car took part in the fun, a'nd tried to keep the dog and prevent her rescuers from reaching her by blocking their way thru the cart. Finally Lawton and Burke caught their pet, however, and got the conductor to stop the train. Aa they left the soldiers cheered the Ore men, Just to thow there was no Ill- will.
