S, IOIU HOW TO BATHE MD SLEEP TOLD BY DEAN OF WOMEN Must Not Take Plunge Too Cold, Millie Hot Itath Is Good for Nerv ous Exhaustion Keep Thought Good on Going to Ikil Special to The Herald. CUKVALLIB, vch. 3. T.ako caro of tho body, especially In regard to baths, sleep and tho proper treatment of tho feet, hair, eyes, stomach, nose, throat .and teeth, was tho subject of tho address by Dr. Anna Z. Cnvync, dean of women, beforo tho women of tho short course at tho Oregon Agrl cultural college, in which sho gavo them some excellent advice. "Although sonio iiconlo can stand a plunge In Ico water, It l apt to pre vent the desired results with most people, If they aro suddenly subject ed to cold water," said Mrs. Crnync. "Tho water should bo cooled gradual ly, and tho temperature suited to each person's reaction power. Most au thorities claim It Is not right to tako an absolutely cold bath. "Do not bo too severe with yourself. but get tho bath habit at all events. Hot baths hnvo Just a contrary effect to the cold; at draft ho blood vessels contract, and then become greatly dl lated, tho skin gets full of blood, tho heart beats faster, and tho sweat glands begin to work vigorously. The special uso of tho hot bath Is to draw away tho blood from sorao con gested part, or to relax tho tension of tho system. A man sometimes. finds It Impossible to rest because of nerv ous exhaustion. In such a case a hot bath is excellent. "What Is It in us tbat goes to stcon? is u tno DralnT Certainly It Is not the body, for tho body keeps working Incessantly. Its activity Is simply reaucca to a lower level. Tho heart beats moro slowly, the blood pressuro Is lower, tho breathing Is Irregular ana less frequent, tho muscles relaxed the blood supplied to tho brain is diminished; but thcro Is still work being done. Sleep Is a nearly rclattvo condition, not sharply cut off from waking life. "The moment of all moments when wo aro most misceptlblo to psychic suggestion Is that when wo -to on tho verge of sleep. Mnko suro that tho thoughts" admitted to your mind at that tlmo are strong and healthy ones thoughts of Joy, of success and ac complishment. It has been proven beyond a doubt that a man can mako suggestions to himself at this tlmo with a positive effect for good uDon tho spirit and efficiency of his life. "As a general prlnplcle It must bo remembered that sleep Is a non-stren uous thing. It must not bo approach cd like an enemy to be conquered, but as a mistress to be wooed, not by dl rcct attack, but by Indirect methods. Tq let down the tension of tho day, to becomo quiet In body and mind, Is tho first essential step. Dr. Morso says tnat ono of the next great steps for ward will bo tho gradual acquisition of sleep control, so that a man can toko a fow minutes' rest whenever ho wants It through the day."
