' v' " t COMMON USER OF NA TRON PASS ENDORSED A resolution was adopted by the Commercial Club memberB Thursday endorsing the plea of the Central Ore gon Development League for a com mon user of the Natron cut-off by the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific lines. The local citizens were ad dressed at a luncheon by Mayor W. H. Doolittle and J. W. McCulloch, of On tario. "We are making a tour of the state," said Mr. McCulloch, "in order to educate the people to the needs of the commonwealth as a whole. Un less a railroad is built from Ontario to Eugene, as originally planned by the late E. II. Harriman, when he con trolled the three great Pacific systems, we will never see a develoment of that great landed area of central and south eastern Oregon. We are told that the Central Pacific may tap us from Og den. This is improbable, if possible, and even should such development oc cur, it will result in deflecting our trade to California. We want this de velopment and the drawing of new set tlers, in order that we may create new wealth and a readjustment of the tax burden." . . , , , The resolution adopted by the local citizens follows : "Whereas, The Supreme - Court or the United States, by recent decision in disposal of the case of the United States versus the Southern Pacific and Central Pacific railway companies, has declared the operation of the two sys tems under one management as inimi cal to the general welfare of the coun try ; and has ordered that the Southern Pacific Company be divested of the Central Pacific properties, and, "Whereas, Our attention as citizens of Hood River county and members of the Hood River County Commercial Club has been called by the Central Oregon Development League to the needs of railroad development in that great area in the southeastern and central part of our state, and, 'Whoroga aa hplieve that one of the greatest needs of Oregon is the settlement or tnis lanaea empire, which will automatically result in a re lief from our existing burden of heavy taxes. ' , ."Now. Therefore, be it ltesoiveo. That we endorse plans for the final dif position of the properties or the Central Pacific Company which call for a common user of the Natron cut-oft by the Southern Pacific and Union Pa cific systems, our action in mis mauer being actuaiea oy uie.ueuei mm. rum solution will result in the constructing of a rail line from Ontario, Oregon, to Eugene, Oregon, witn various laierum. and that such construction alone will develop this hinterland of ours and tend to weld our state into a greater commercial unit and body politic, and lie It runner itesoiveu mat we f ..-J .nniil rt theHA TPBfll II t lOnS tO luinaiu v. v j i v. v. - m nnnnrasiiinniil rfolepntinn. the Cen tral Oregon Development League and the press oi me state.
