HOOD RIVER ODELL By Gordon G. Hrown ueeemher .- inclusive, a pruning school will be conducted in the Hood River valley. The purpose for which this course is offered is to familiarize the gmwer with the fundamental un deriving this practice. It is not hoped to turn out expert pruners from ama teur stock in two or three days' train ing, but it is reasonable to expect that anyone taking this courie will become proficient in handling the problems as they arise in the average orchard. Two district schools will be conduct ed, one at i'arkdale during Monday and Tuesday, December 5 and 6 inclusive. The remaining two days will be spent in the Lower Valley with the city of Hood River as headquarters. A one-half day indoor session will be held in the Molsaae hall during the morning ol December 5. The remain der of the time in that section will be spent in the orchard. The indoor ses sion in the Lower Valley, will be held in Library hall of Hood River, in the morning of December 7. The remain ing one and one-half days will likewise be spent in the East Side and West Side orchards. The writer especially desires to im press upon those who contemplate tak ing this course, the importance of at tending the indoor sessions. There all preliminary discussion of fundamentals will be carried on and will not be re peated in the field. This is important. Be there and make the most of this op portunity. Held work will be a prac tical application of pruning. The work will be immediately in charge of Clay ton L. Long, extension specialist of the Oregon Agricultural College, assisted by members of the local Experiment Station stair. This is the second pruning school to be held loci.lly. In 1017 a very suc cessful school whs held and attended by a large number of growers. This yeas the enrollment will undoubtedly be large. Any one is eligible for this course and no charges will be made. Watch the date and be on band. UPPER VALLEY SPUD CROP IS SHORT The Upper Vallev potato crop will not be affected by the heavy snowfall that covers the district, according to J. F. Thompson, who was here Satur day, other than that the weather condi tions, if they linger, will prevent movement of the crop. t'ractically all of the district s po tatoes were dug," says Mr. Thomp son, but not more than 10 per cent had been sold and shipped. Growers have stored their potatoes in pits. The Upper Vallev potato yield was very disappointing this year. We expected 100 cars. We will not iret over SO. The quality, however, is very high, and all growers are expecting top prices for their tubers. Our Shoe Repairing will double the life of your footwear. D 'filer in REAL ESTATE Fruit and Farm Lands Snow Insurance Would Be Popular It is likely that some enterprising insurance company will devise a new form of policy to include reimburse ment for damage from collapse due to weight of snow. Those who have ob served the feeling of citizens here the past few days declare that such a scheme, if it really materializes, will lie launched at a psychological mo ment. Indeed, Monday citizens were calling on insurance agents asking if property could be so insured. Present insurance policial on resi dences and business property do not carry such indemnity. Citizens not strenuously inclined faced the task of wielding snowshovels reluctantly, yet in many instances where Hat roofs had begun to creak with the weight of snow, there seemed no alternative. Men were paid $1 an hour for shovel ing snow, and no extra hands were available. Commodore Dean ikls licit Commodore O. C. Dean, la'-t Thurs day night was presented with the champknahip belt by the Hood (Jiver Society for the Perpetutaion ami Pres ervation of Incongruous Veracity. Commodore Dean has become known to the entire northwest as an inveterate practical joker. It is likely that no citizen of Hood Kiver or Klickitat county, Washington, has escaped him in moments of facetiousness. The presentation of the belt by the unique society followed last week s practical joke on the Commodore. Hills fen Mt. Relief Corps Bazaar Success The members of the Woman's Relief Corps, despite the inclemency of the weather, a snow storm raging through out the day, held a successful bazaar at the blowers Hardware store Satur day. Hundreds of feminine wearing apparel, made by women of all valley districts, fancy work, chinaware and cookery were mild. Prominent women of the city and valley, members of the patriotic organization, acted as clerks. i ! All At Once! Mr. and Mrs. Bell toured as far south as Sacramento, where they called on Wilmer Sieg. general man ager of the California Fruit Distribu tors, and wife.
