MUCH ADVERTISING The advertising that the Columbia River Highway is getting from east em sources, declares ci. A. rranz, is showing its results now daily. Trans continental tourists, Mr. Franz says, are making out their intinerary, in or der to see the famed scenic boulevard. "1 ran across a very real example of the results of the fame of the High- ! way, not only for its scenery hut be ' cause of its lure as a perfect pave ! ment, the other day," says Mr. Franz, j "when 1 noted a New York license ! plate on a machine standing on the j street. I was naturally interested in : people from the Kmpire State and ap i proached for a talk. He told me that on leaving home he and his wife had j planned on going straight west from 1 Yellowstone National Park to Seattle. ; He told of his plans at ChicHgo and the automobile club information bu ! reau persuaded him that he should go south from Spokane to Walla Walla and thus tour over the Columbia River Highway. "That man had become enthusiastic over Oregon scenery after his journey from The Dalles to Hood River. 1 told him he had TO miles of wonderland coming. He probably reached Fort land with his enthusiasm at the boiling point." Golf Enthusiast Visits Here Col. J. E. Cairns.great war veteran, having Berved throughout the Mesopo tamia campaign with the British Army, accompanied by Dr. E. W. La zelle, was here Thursday interviewing local golf enthusiasts about laying out a course. Col. Cairna had heard, he stated, that plans were under way for a local course. He was told, however, that nothing definite had developed. Tentative plans call for a course main tained jointly by local men and the Co lumbia uorge Hotel, it was stated. Col. Cairns, who had retired from the army as a colonel and was opera ting a large ranch in Australia, shipped at once for home on the out break of the war. He was not per mitted to volunteer In Australia, hav ing passed the age limit. He came to the Pacific Coast a year ago, Dr. La- zell.savs.Jand at once fell in love with Oregon. He has decided to make his home here. Having played golf in England from the time he was a small boy he has become expert in the sport and in the methods of laying out and maintaining courses. Dr. Lazelle last year aided Hood River county in testing purchases of cement which were found not. up to the standard demanded in bridge con struction. Thursday afternoon, guided by County Engineer Cruikshank he visited the East Side to see the con crete paving now being uncovered there. SHRUBBERY BURNED BY DESERTED FIRE A neglected campfire just south of Tuckers Hridge on the river road to Summit last week resulted in the de struction of trees and shrubbery of one of the district's favorite camping spots. The burn spread to the Hood river canyonside and for a time threat ened orchards and nearby homes be fore it was brought to control. The lire was the worst of the season according to State Fire Warden L. O. Rhoades, who, as does Chief Forest Ranger Stanley C. Walters, declares a number of smaller roadside fires have apparently been started by cigarette or cigar stubs tossed from passing automobiles. "Motorists sholud break themeslves of this practice of tossing away lighted cigar or cigarette stubs," declares Mr. Walters. "Weather conditions are making the roadsides and forest tin derlike, and a single cirgarette stub may cause us a heavy damage and serious inconvenience." Murray Woman's Story Denied Luther Fagan, paroled convict who was recently killed here while he was holding at bay a posse with threats to kill Mrs. T. J. Miller'and daughter, was not related to the woman, who, recently here, gave her name as Mrs. M. Murray and claimed to be an aunt of Fagan, according to a letter just received from Mrs. S. R. McCulley, grandmother of Fagan, by City Marshal Hart. Authorities are unable to explain the claims of the Murray woman unless by establishing ber blood Relationship she.hoped to secure bonus funds due him. Mrs. McCulley's letter states that Fagan's mother still lives in Okla homa. Fagan, the letter states, was part Indian. He was also an illegiti mate child. Fagan served honorably overseas in the great war, it is atated, and Mrs. McCulw writes that he has his discharge papers as well as his parole from the Oregon penitentiary.
