Wis., who has resided there for 71 .years, reiterated the expression so often voiced by easterners- on their first journey to the wild and woolly west, hs he left here last week after a visit with his old friend and business associate, S. (1. Oxhorrow, West Hide orchard lit. "Your advancement and modes of life are .surprising to me, said Mr Younir. "Realty, vou have a higher type of civilization than run he found in the east. 1 expected to find men wearing- revolvers at their hips and with Huuaws at their sides. As for roads, you people of Oregon and Wash ington are so far ahead of us that I would be ashamed to compare our roads with yours. Perhaps, though, we haven't the incentive that has im pelled you here in the midst of this grand scenery. " Mr. Young, who for 51 years has been chief official of a large life insur ance concern, left here for California, where he will visit different points he fore returning home. Mr. Young will call at Sacramento to visit Wilmer Sieg, former sales manager of the Ap ple Growers Association, who is his old friend. GLAD I'M BACK, SAVS (iUS MILLER "The east may boast long and loud over its wealth," says (Jus Miller, who has just returned from Ohio, where he spent the winter with his wife attend Ing to matters of business, "but there isn't much to boast over. I intended to remain in Ohio until this fall, but I feared the aultry summer weather would entirely melt me. 1 was per spiring all day and all night. 1 lost 20 pounds, and my wife and 1 decided to pack up and seek the coolness of Hood River Valley. I have already begun to take on that lost flesh. " Mr. Miller says the Ohio districts haven't yet learned how to build roads. The country thoroughfares, he de clares, are abominable. Mr. Miller last year purchased a farm from M. R. Noble. The place overlooks the Co lumbia River Highway at Ruthton Hill. He plans on developing the place and making it one of the valley's beauty spots. New Cherry Package A new cherry package called the Signal lug has been introduced in Ore gon and is being tiled this season for the first time. All of the cherries hipped this year by the Oregon Grow ers Oooiierative Association have lieen in boxes of this type and reports indi cate that they are very satisfactory. The box has broad slata on the sides, top and bottom so that ample ventila tion is provided. The eilges of the sides of the box are beveled so that the fruit will not be scratched or bruised and the net weight of the package is about 18 pounds. The box is a little shorter and deeper than the one which has been used be fore, the outside dimensions being 17 inches lung by lis inches wide by :!J inches deep. It makes a very attrac tive package and there has been a strong demand for cherries packed in this way. Chimney Sweep Travels In Auto Jack Patsy, professional chimney sweep, here last week was bemoaning his act of purchasing an automobile. "Everybody told me that all I needed was a truck to haul around my equip ment, which 1 ordered specially from England at the expenditure of a neat fortune," nays the chimney sweep. "They told me it would be economy, and that 1 could make all of the small er outlying towns at a minimum of ex pense. That automobile has been the most expensive thing I ever had any thing to do with. Owning an automo bile is too much of a luxury for a chimney sweep. " Munemato Harvests Tomatoes The season's first tomatoes were harvested last week by Harry Mune mato. The vegetables were retailed at the Star Grocery for 25 cents per pound. The Japaness gardener saved but a small plot of tomatoes from the recent Colombia fleahet, which inundated his in ! Rut for this disaster, he would have been harvesting tomatoes in large quantities by this time. COST HIM PRICE OF CLASSY AUTO Portland Man SeiireOd In Vain For Relief From Trouble s Until he Marteil Taking Tanliic "Hefore I began taking Tanlac I couldn't touch a bit of meat or fruit without being in misery for hours af terwards," said H. .).'. Rlair, machin ist at the Elite Garage, Twelfth and Jefferson streets, Portland. Ore. "1 simply dreaded to eat anything at all, and the little 1 did force myself to take soured and formed gas that bloated me up like a drum and the pain was awful. 1 got so dizzy at times I could hardly see, and I also sulfered from headaches. Mv kidneys worried me so that it was agony for me to stoop over. I had awful attacks of rheumatism that almost laid me out altogether, and I'm sure I spent the price of a good, classy automobile on medicines and treatments that didn't get me anywhere. "Since taking Tanlac for the first time in twenty years I am free of all pain and feeling fine. My kidneys 1 don't trouble me now, the puins in my back are gone and all signs'of rheuma tism have disappeared. I sleep like a log and get up rested and refreshed and ready for anv kind of hard work." 1 Adv. One Hollar sau-o Represents Ten Pollers Ksrned The average man does not save to exceed ten er cent of his earnings. He must spend nine dollars in living exfienses for every dollar saved. That being the case he can not be too care ful about unnecessary expenses. Very ot ten a few cents properly invested, like buying seeds for his garden, will ine several dollars outlay later on. It is the same in buying Chamberlain's t'olic a;id Diarrhoea Remedy. It coats hut a few cents, and a bottle of it in the house often saves a doctor's bill of several dollars. IstBjia Uruciiist Fined Kd l.aurin, Astoria druggist, was lined 810 and OOStS before Justice of the Peace Onthank last week for al leged ipessttng on the Highway. Trallic officers, who apprehended the l.aurin car. also repotted that they dis covered a bottle of alcohol in the ma chine. The charge of possession of in toxicating liquor, however, was not pressed, as Mr. l.aurin explained that he had a right to the alcohol in his ca pacity as a druggist.
