All of us would do well to pause and give study to the ruggedness of his character, his simple honesty and then rededicate our?elves to the task of solving problems that confront our nation. This advice may be given as well to the national or state legislator as to the private individual. The par lous times and aftermath of a great war are attain upon us. Discords pre vail and the discontented foment false doctrines that mock the fundamentals and ideals of the commonwealth. Too much of an irreverence prevails throughout the land, irreverence not alone for the ideals of our country but for natural laws of a Divine l'rovi dence. Three seems a general indiffer ence toward an established order of things and a tolerance of (lighty new llms. We need to get hack to the simple faith of such characters as Abraham Lincoln. II. R. Market Completes Improvements Tht Hood Uiver Market, owned by A. F. Davenport, has been greatly improved in the past several weeks. Mr. Davenport lias completed the in stallation of a Harris refrigerating plant. The equipment is the most modern the market, affords. Two cold rooms have been provided, one on the main floor, opening into the market, and the other in the basement, where the pickling room will be located. The fresh meat storage room will hold over a half a car of carcasses, A sausage room, equipped with electrically driven machinery, is located on the first floor. The show cases have been so ar ranged to make the market more convenient. Poultry Association Meeting Soon The Hood Kiver County I'oultry As sociation has scheduled a meetin-r for Friday afternoon, February 25, when experts will be here for addresses on methods of poultry feeding. It is also planned to have some one here to talk to dairymen on methods of feeding their cows. Prof. Brewster, formerly of the Ore gon Agricultural College, who is now with the Kerr Gifford Co., of Portland, will be the chief speaker. t . 1 . I .ft ! TT l"l' I H s, IT IIS M FKATII IlltS .l"H--I--l-M-!--r-i-r-i--!-!-W-!- Deputy State Game Warden W. O. Hadley says that he ha found a num ber of ranchers of this section carrying an erroneous interpretation of the laws governing the closed season on trout lishing. Many farmers, Mr. Hadley says, have expressed the belief that the law will permit them to catch trout over 10 inches in length. This is an error that may lead to arrest. During the closed Feason, from December to April 1, no trout may be taken. Fish ermen, however, are permitted to take salmon trout or other migratory game fish over 16 inches. i If the lower house of the legislature fails to defeat the bill calling for the state expenditure of 12,500,000 on the proposed Hoosevclt Highway, the people will have to proceed to invali date the measure by their votes. Ore gon taxpayers were willing to put up two and a half million dollars if the federal government would build the proponed coast road as a military high way. They will not no t" the extent, at present, at least, of building all the road. Down al Salem the legislature is proposing a prohibition commission and a salaried commissioner to enforce anti-liquor laws. We wonder if this proposed increase of the tax burden is wise. It does seem to us that the pro hibition law can be enforced if law abiding citizens will cooperate with our existing sheriffs and police officers. The county court has assured or chardists of the valley that funds will be provided and a competent fruit inspector appointed. The campaign thus outlined will only be successful if all growers pledge themelves to co operate in a clean-up movement and then rigidly adhere to their pledges. DO not delay too long turning in your income tax report. Remember that a return must be made even though your exemptions may relieve you from tax, in case your gioss income exceeds the amount specified by law: $1,(100 for single persons : or $$2,000 for married men. A dispatch from The Dalles says that citizens there, seeking renewed youth, are searching in vain for health ful, youthful, virile billy goats, that the animals may be slaughtered for their r lands. W hy not try jack rab bits? The student body council at the Junior High School has made a fine beginning in the action taken to bun moving pictures and other pleasure features on nights when study should be uppermost. Twelfth Sticet Owners Complain Pusiness men, owning stores along Twelfth street, on the Heights are com plaining that the city has been dilatory in makfitc repairs to two blocks of the thoroughfare, where the paving has worn out. The street is full of holes and is muddy. The property owners declare that the duat from the dried out mud is annoying. As the property owners have already paid twice for surfacing the street, they declare further improvement should be done out of flic general fund. Peddlers Bilk Public, Is Charge Grocers declare that peddlers, who hawked oranges from a motor truck here Saturday, bilked the public. It is said that the fruit sold was not of the best grade and that mixed sizes were used. The peddlers sold small-sized fruit at 2!) cents per dozen in the early morning. As the day advanced the price was decreased to 11 oranges lor 25 cents and HO for 50 cents. "We have been selling a better qual ity orange of the same size, " says A. L. Vincent, "for the past two weeks for 20 cents per dozen." Brock Goes to Army Authorities, who wrote to the State Industrial School at Salem to ascertain icasons for the release of Robert Brock, minor, committed from here for lloating bad checks, state that it is an nounced that the boy was permitted to go free to join the army. When he came before the juvenile court here last fall he was paroled on the under standing he would join the army or navy. I he boy, at that time, how ever, left huje after telling friends that he was en route to Canada. He was arrested at Seattle and returned to the Salem sch ml from there. Orchard Tax Kefund Expected Judge R. C. (ilanville, attorney for the Prookside Orchards Co., Operating tracts on the West Side, recently ap plied for a refund on 1919 income tax, based on loss of lit is from the heavy freeze of December of that year, whic h will reach more than $1,000. Subse quent to filing of the application, a ruling of the department has been re ceived here announcing that such de ductions will be permissible. No rul ing, however, has been received in the ipeeifie case, the application having been forwarded to Washington. The yellow flag is out again in Hood River. It behooves those who have not yet been vaccinated to hasten to the docl or. During the it will be prunes. week of February in order (o say it 14-19 with Women's Auxiliary Plans Drive Following closely upon the heels of a membership drive by the Poet, comes a similar drive by the Women's Auxil iary Unit of American Legion, Post No. 2J. As the wives, mothers, sis ters and daughters of all Legion men are eligible for membership, it is e x pcetcd that the present number of members, about KS, will be at least doubled if not more greatly increased. An Me membership committee has been named and is comosed of : Mrs. A. H. Perry; Mrs. K. W. Dunbar, Odell; Mrs. F. EL Plackman. Tine Crove; Mrs. Ella Wilbur; and Mrs. I. Many good times among the mem bers of the Auxiliary and the Post are also to be planned by the social com mittee recently named by the new president of the unit. This committee is as follows: Mrs. W. U. Metcalf, Mrs. E. A. Franz. Sr., Mrs. Kent Shoemaker, Mrs. Franklin Gilbert and Mrs. A. C. Staten. Lantern Starts Gasoline Fire A spectacular fire was btarted Mon day night when a lantern on the front of a motor truck of the Oregon-Wasb-ipgton Truck Transportation Co. ig nited gas vapor while the gasoline tank was being filled in front of the Dickson-Marsh Motor Company's gar age. 1 lie Intel lor ot the gasoline tank. containing about six gallons of the highly combustible liquid caught fire. An alarm was sounded, but the flames were quickly smothered with chemicals before the fire department was able to respond. Fire Engine Explanation Made T. D. Waldie, secretary of the Hood River Volunteer Fire Department, sta'es that some criticism has been directed at the department because a new motor-driven fire engine waH not ns il Monday night in responding to an alarm resulting from a gasoline lire in front of the Dickson-Marsh garage. "While the truck had arrived." says Mr. Waldie, "the city had withheld acceptance until after the state fire underwriters' association bad given it a formal teat. This test was given Tuesday afternoon." Lon (haney Coming to Liberty In "The Penalty," which will be ihoWD at the Liberty next Monday and TucmImn Lon ("haney, noted as "The Frog" in the "Miracle Man," will appear as "Plizzard," the legless crook, ('haney appears to have only short tub of lec,s. The delusion is secured i.. him having his legs doubled back and tied. The strain was so great that he was able to act only in 8-min-ute relays. The show, it is said, has many of th. Ik ait tugs that character ized the "Miracle Man." It pays to advertise, declares Tel. W. Plount. assistant postmaster. Im mediately following newspaper stories of a record catch of mice at the post office, a cat appeared. It has remained ever since. Mr. Plount had already caught 2'J mice, and he believes the cat will have little work. The animal, however, was fed some of the freshly killed mice. A number of citizens have been heard to .express sympathy with the pottoffice force over the plague of mice and ofTers of cats are pouring in. The office may end with more cats than it formerly had mice. The police received a call last week to visit the home of W. R. Greene. local Western Unicn manager, where a mad dog was reported. Deputy Slier ill' Glenn Sloat, who responded, found a fox terrier puppy suffering from some form of poisoning. He killed the dog. The sphenodon, a lizard-like animal, found only in New Zealand, is the only known modern representative of the great reptilian order living at the close of the carboniferous age. Carroll Riv ers sent this information to the Sema phore with the query. "Can the agent at Hood River match this?" Fred has just fairly started. He h s to his credit a red, white and blue striped lizard. As the carboniferous ago fol lowed the devonian, or age of fishes. and as Fred, is an authority on things piscatorial, it is safe to conclude that he will not let a little thing like a Hphenodon dim the lustre of his contri butions to science.
