0 CO 03003 0 one noon river Glacier, twrsday, heptember o, 1020 tyiwb Iter (Kiarirr AKTHLilt U. MOE. I'ubllaher. Subscription, tS.OO Per Year. THE NON-PARTISAN COMMITTEE On Saturday, August 21, a party, headed by Robert E. Smith, represent ing the Oreeon Taxpayers League, and Lloyd Riches, secretary of the Oregon Editorial Association, met at the rooms of the Commercial Club for a discus sion of wuys and means of educating electors on the ills that would befall Oregon industry and commerce, if they vote for an initiative measure, proposed for the November ballot, providing for a reduction of interest to four and five por cent. The visitors also discussed and with equal emphasis, the Non-Par tisan League. When these men, who had already held similar meetings in 11 other Oregon counties, completed their presentation of data, it was unanimous ly decided by the men present that some organization should be prefected in Hood River county, not only for ed ucating people against the live per cent interest measure but for waging a cam paign aganist Non-I'artisanism. The meeting was'made Dp of representative ciitzens, ranchers, professional men and business .men. As it was Saturday morning, and an exceedingly busy time for the merchants present, it was de cided to forego organization for the time being and the suggestion that the Commercial Club and Merchants Asso ciation appoint an executive committee of five to take charge of the work, was adopted. The action of the meeting was at once made known to J. 11. Fred ricy, vice-president of the Commecial Club and C. O. Huelat, president of the Merchants' Association. The officials of the clubs heard the message, which placed emphasis equal ly on the menace of the five per cent interest measure and on the Non-Partisan lieague. They agreed to take the initiative in appointing the executive committee, the names of which were published last week. But it appears letters mailed out to the members of the committee, calling the i1rnt meet ing, failed to make any mention of the Non-Partsian League, and the five men chosen, or those of them present, or ganized for the sole purpose of com batting the interest bill. Nothing, however, was said to the press about the omission of the Non-Partisan part of the program, and thus ernbarassment was brought to members of the com mittee. It was unfortunate that the press was not correctly informed of the failure of the officials of the Commer cial Club and Merchants Association to follow the program as outlined at the original meeting. As was stated in the Glacier last week, we believe Non-Partisanism as great a danger for Oregon as the five per cent interest billl We are not op posed to farmers organiziing for the betterment of their business and to se cure more for their product. In view of the prices that farmers receive for produce and the ultimate charge made to the consumer, even though the pro duce passes through but few hands there seems some need for reform. Hut Non-Partisanism, as put to practice in North Dakota and which leaders of the organization hope to foist on Oregon and other Northwestern states, puts into effect a state socialism that would bring us many more ills than the one wo can discern would follow in the WBke of a five per cent interest bill Indeed, we have reached the point where it will be necessary to do some thinking. We dareHay that not a tenth of the electors of Hood River county have any degree of understanding of Non-Partisanism and what have been its effects in North Dakota. Many who have professed a support of the radical trend have done so simply because of dissatisfaction with existing conditions, while others.of conservatve tendencies, have expressed opposition simply be cause they refuse to tolerate anything that smacks of radicalism. We are reaching a point where we should give this new system of state socialism a close study. The very fact that the citizenship of Oregon communities has been found susceptible to the bacteria of Non-Partisan propagandists indi cates the need of changes that will tetter the opportnitiea of producers. In no very distant time, if the Bigni of today mtv.n anything, voters of Oregon are going to have ti take a stand. If the electors will fully inform them selves wc ha-.e no fear of the outcome. m Our guests seemed to enjoy every moment of Monday. We are glad that they carried away with them thoughts that will linger in their memories and cause them to remember Hood River with kindness and interest. Our guest of howr, Mr. P.enson, must have con sidered the great and sincere ovation to him a crowning moment of his life of hard work and achievement. We are glad that he knows the hearts of his eountrvmen while the current of life still flows strongly. THE OLD OAKEN BUCKET Time was when men could listen to "The Old Oaken Bucket" with genuine appreciation. But the moss-covered, iron-bound receptacle of olden times has been replaced by faucets and foun tains and patent individual drinking cups. Along with prohibition the world will lose thHt wondrous conver sational accomplishment of some men who discoursed with pleasure, and an actual knowledge of their subject, on the merits and peculiar qualities of various vintages, brews and products of the distillers. It was indeed a pleas ure to see the epicurean bon vivant sip his wine with a perfume 20 years old Concrete Being Poured With the arrival of lumber for forms, work on the concrete pavitir be ing laid in Odell is being rushed unt pouring or concrete is in full swini. Numerous minor accidents and an noying delays have retarded progress oi me worn, nut u is expected that the road will be completed in time to permit apple hauling over the new paving. Future meetings of such a nature will be all the more successful for it. Community endeavor will proceed with more of a unity of action. ltwas a day on which the entire population of the vail-y fogot politics, o'd grudges or religious preferences and partici pated inajgreat democratic gath.-ring. We sho'ild (fl together in such wise Kt least once a year. If c do so we can set a pace throughout the coast for community development. The events of Monday to a newspa per man were something like a thrce rmg cirrus, and it is inevitable that Borne feature will be missed in the atory that chronicles the joyous happen ings. Iut wc wish in our passing com ment to express an appreciation of the faithful work of all committee., from' executive committee all the way down to each indivi lual .community commit tee. The cooperation that was evi denced even surpassed that of war days, when we were all working for the great cause for which our bovs were fighting. Space does not permit of renaming those committee, but toward all of we feel sure the county feels grateful. ( lur great celebration not only laid the foundation for better intra-com munity spirit among us Hood Kiver residents, but it is already resulting in a better inter-community spirit. Xer If you knew you could get your old casings repaired in a way that would mean several thousand additional miles of service, you wouldn't hesitate a moment, would you? You can, NOW. We guarantee it. When you bring your injured tire to our shop we will go over it very carefully. If we tell you we can make it practically as good as new you can depend on it- WE WILL. We guarantee that the repair will outlast the rest of the tire. That's fair, isn't it? We have recently installed at f Oak Street a Haywood Model 12 Tire Repair Plant. Haywood machines are in use in all I first-class shops all over the world and the Model 12 is the biggest and best outfit built by Haywood. So cleverly does it do -its work that an entire section of a tire can he renewed, leaving little if any trace of where the old surface leaves off and the new begins. An entire new tread can be applied to an old tire in such an altogether satisfactory way as to give in manv cases dou ble mileage and all without a single stitch being taken in the rubber. Blowouts, Sand Boils. Rim Cuts. Punctures, etc.. can be repaired in a perfectly satisfactory way. Nothing but the highest grades of repair stocks are used in our plant. rOIJI TIRF.S ARE TOO M l ABLE TO THROW AWAY; GK1 THEM OVER TO WHITEHEADS TODAY. 0 Hisxl River tlommsndery No 12. K .
