Ole Larson Killed in Portland On the way to his old home in Swe den, Ole Larson, for 10 years employed on the loading piatfornu of the Oregon Lumber Co. at Dee, was the victim of foul play in Portland last week. Mr. Larson had saved up about $5,000 and had sent a hair Ol the sum home. II was waiting in Portland to secure his passport, when he fell in with vendors of moonshine liquor, it ts thought. He I wan found unconscious on the street. . and it was at first believed that he was j a victim of sleeping sickness. Later it was discovered that he had been felled ! with a blow on the head. Mr. Larson's money was gone, and I authorties were going to bury him in the 1'otter s held when R. W. Kmmett, of Dee Flat, visited Portland and took eharire of funeral aer vices. Bdrar The two men went to the Islands as members of a Missouri national guard regiment during the Spanish-American war. One of the most interesting windows recently seen in Hood River has aroused the curiosity of pedestrians at the etore of W. F. Laraway the past week. Mr. Laraway has displayed photo graphs illustrating a book just pub lished by the Jngersoll Watch Co. on the orogress of watchmaking. The dis play is an eoucational one. It shows the evolution of timekeeping apparat us. The crude methods of the prehis toric man with his burning grass rope are depicted. The submerged bowl of ancient Etrypt. where a faithful slave watched the sinking bowl, and as it sank from view eounded the hours. The hour glass, sundials and others methods were depicted. Finally the height of modern efficiency at the great Jngersoll factory was exhibited. Mr. l.araway displayed along with the Ir.Kersoll pictures a reli" of davs before watches, a compass and sundial made in Paris in the 1 nth centurv I he interesting curiosity ifl now owned by L. O. Mecham. By a system of caleu lation the middle age contrivance would be used on sunshiny days in 21 import ant cmes ot Europe for telling the time.
