Michael Pietere.of St. Helens, charged with the abduction of- Mary Robinson, of that piace, was released on $2000 bail the first of this week, and at an early hour yesterday morning he was picked up on the streets of Portland in an un conscious state, the victim of morphine. It is supposed that he attempted his life with this subtle drug. At the time of going to press we could learn but little of the particulars. When found it was thought he was dying.' Altnough re stored to consciousness, it was thought there was little or no hope of hisTecov- ery. He refused to talk. In a conver sation with Sheriff White a few days ago he said he would never go to the penitentiary, if convicted. He said he knew how to take his life and all the officers of the law might be Btanding by and they could not prevent it. Mike seems to have taken time by the fore lock, not caring to wait for the verdict of a jury. His was the only state -case of importance to come up before this term of Circuit Courts The Methodist Conference made many changes in its. recent session. Kev. Rockwell was transferred as presiding elder to East Portland District and Rev. W. B. Hollingshead'waa appointed pre siding elder of this district. Rev. J. W. Hawkins was returned as pastor to Clatskanie Rev. G. W. Thorp was sent to Seaside, and Rev. J. i. Al'ord was' appointed to the Rainier-St. Hel ens circuit. J. Demminc, who has taken over the St. Helens pharmacy, to his own con-i trol, is getting in shape for business. Jay, as he is usually called, is one of the best business men of our county. Having grown up in the county, he is known by nearly everybody residing in the county. He has been deputy treasurer for a num ber of years, and it is very pleasing to note that he is now goiny into" biminef-s for himself. - V.r.sr..; Vr. Ai-.-i:5 Ui;:!,' arrival in t.
